Application like Outlook for email, Media Player for music, Facebook needs to make the social networking application. Then it can rule the roost. Then MS will copy it and include for free with Windows 8. ;-)
Selling social network software is not about building facebook 'clones' - people are not going to make money this way. As pointed out, FB doesn't even have a revenue model, so what chance has anyone else got?
The point of social network software is to create niche communities where you can target their needs and desires.
There is so much in this article I can't agree with.
First off, why would anyone want to start from scratch to build a site like Facebook, which has 150 million users? Why would anyone join an empty site with no new features? Also remember that Facebook doesn't even have a decent revenue model, so anyone dumb enough to attempt to emulate it is unlikely to make any money out of it unless they can get it to the same scale as Facebook. Which, oddly, DOES take money -- you think hosting to that scale comes free?
Further, it's probably easier to integrate social elements into an existing website of value (i.e. there is an original idea behind it) by adding Facebook Connect, which enables a website owner to make the site a lot easier to use for all existing Facebook users whilst promoting their site on Facebook. This costs nothing bar a few days coding to get it looking right and would seem to be a far wiser move than starting from scratch.
It does feel like the whole article was put together to add susbtance to a sensationalist headline.

Facebook is awesome, it's really the only one of these sites worth using. It has a good UI, lots of features, and most importantly it works fast. The good UI and speed are what separate it from something like Myspace, the future textbook example of poor website design. As for linkedin and friendster and all the rest... they just kinda suck, and theres a reason nobody uses them very much
When I first try facebook I feel it just not good. I still like Friendster because it is much better. I wonder why people not making frindster clone? Although Indonesian has been caught Facebook popularity, I still find facebook is not as good as Friendster. Is just as bad as Ubuntu (I rather using another distro or windows).

I spent a fair amount of time researching this subject and loved this article when I came across it.
Great Info!
I was lucky enough to get in back in Nov of 08 when http://www.snempire.com was open for a brief period of time.
I was able to get a kick ass social networking site that is made special for entrepreneurs who are working to create profits.
there was training and automation built in so well I had the thing up and running in no time at all.
I think they are opening back up some time in march still at http://www.snempire.com

What a coincidence! $0 is about what I value those social network sites too!
