I just don't get the race for thinner and thinner screens. I'm sat here looking at mine now and as I'm staring at it straight on, it could be 10mm or 100mm or...well you get the idea. It's a lot of extra cash for a load of old marketing bullocks.

Sony no longer has a TV factory. It gets all its LCD panels from a "join venture" with Samsung managed by "Korean". You need to wait for OLED if you want a Sony panel.
Anyway a thinner LCD panel has minimum practical advantage, unless it is energy efficient and can be implemented in a laptop.

yep, and Samsung already has! It showed a 6mm thin TV at this year's CES show.
