Combo Update is the Way to Go

After having a little problem some time ago, I always use the combo updates - these seem to be way less error-prone. After all, it's the operating system that's patched and it doesn't hurt to go the safest route here.

Encountered a problem

I attempted to upgrade my one month old Macbook from 10.5.5 to the .6 a few hours after it was announced.

My computer thought it had downloaded the whole 150ish MB update in less than a minute, which was odd, and then it was stuck for many minutes at the configuration stage.

I did a hard reset, downloaded the whole 300MB dmg upgrade from the apple website and the upgraded without further problem.

A bit of a lame release by Apple, IMO.

So far so good...

Upgraded several Intel and PowerPC Macs with Software Update, run from the command line and the GUI without a hitch. This also included a server.

i also have this issue

Ahh, so this is why for the last 2 times the update has failed terribly, and just frozen up, I have left it on over the weekend lets hope it doenst bork the system completely. And yes mac's have just as many (I personally reckon more) issues than windows, comparing with say XP SP3 which seems to be rather bulletproof (touch wood).

pfff

Downloaded it and installed it as soon as it appeared onto a new (in October) Macbook and have had absolutely no problems since.

Don't know what the fuss is about.

I would be furious(ly embarrassed) if it was my machine that was bricked.
Apple users - we are human, if somewhat more enlightened.

...yes i agree... it realy is pathetic when MS Windows flaws are discovered and "every" Apple and Linux lover show
up just to bash MS... but when it happens the other way around they stay quiet as a mouse LOL ...i agree it's pathetic.

Typical nonsense from Mac discussion sites

Mac discussion sites should never be taken seriously. Very few of the posters truly know what they are talking about. it's worse than the anti-Vista hype that has consumed the PC world.

It is an old Mac myth that the Combo update is better than the delta updates. It's simply rarely the case. One Mac geek has a problem that appears to be resolved by the Combo and then it spreads like a virus.

The package release through the automatic Software Update system is at fault here not the delta standalone update. I always update the system with the standalone updates anyway as it's always good to keep these for future use.

So my advice to Nick is to be careful which bandwagons you jump on because you can't always be sure you won't make a fool of yourself.

@ Ronin looking for a fight are you?

I sense a certain level of disappointment that there is no fight to be had. Rather pathetic don't you think?

Do you think the move was justified?
