Yeah....what a deterent

Right...I can see the "criminals" shaking and hiding in fear now...Good luck with that. Go after the biggest cyberterrorist, the Chinese, or Russians, and yeah, get them convicted. What a joke ! all internal problems were solved and this was the only missing law, from the land of law and order.

Asians hack White House Network

Saw that headline yesterday on a Bloomberg TV new ticker. Haven't seen
any follow up yet.

India gearing up then ?

India is setting up its home-grown version of the CIA then ?
Because the US already has a law that says it can pursue anybody it decides to the end of the Earth (and maybe even beyond). Do you remember the term "extraordinary rendition" ?
Yup, means they can kidnap who they want, wherever they want, and it's legal (in the US anyway).
So India, in a nice developing-country way, is adopting the rules of its political bigger brother. All it's going to need now is its version of the CIA and a translation of "extraordinary rendition" and it can start to rock 'n roll.

Oh, and yeah, it's normal that India tries to prevent other countries from getting nuke info like it did. It's the "do as I say" rule, didn't you know ?

Aimed at secret services?

Is this perhaps aimed at secret services of other countries?

@AJ

Relax. Outlawing even extraterritorial activities is not a new idea, and not a weird one, either.
In Germany and other EU states, Child abuse is a crime no matter where it was committed. The goal was to make it possible to act against EU sex tourists abusing little girls in poor Asian countries.
Of course, Pakistan is going the reverse way here (outlawing foreign activities in their own country rather than outlawing their own citizens' activities in another country). However, I am sure that the US and other countries already do this as well. Export control regulations, anyone?

new challenge

The FBI, NASA and CIA used to be the big hacking achievements. Who would have thought the Pakistani's would post up an even bigger challenge -- cheat death! :)

Not for hackers but wannabes in our families

I know hackers are no goofs... and dominantly we are pleagued with wannabe hackers in our cirlcles, families threatning death through emails at general family matters, marriage, love, chat wars etc. So this step is in right direction though i will not credit it to Pakistan president Zardari but i will give credit to I.S.I (Pakistani version of CIA)

AMANPOUR: The FBI and the Pakistani police start making progress.
DISKIN: We got our next lead our or best lead when we were able to identify. Primarily, the Pakistani authorities were able to identify a land line that they felt one of the e-mails was hooked up to.
BENNETT: One of the e-mails had an IP address on it that we traced back to a particular server location, an Internet cafe. And we identified one particular server within that cafe.

Might be reasonable...

...when looked at from the viewpoint of Sharia Law. A single theft nets a lost hand, after all, and for a mega-theft just move the cut up a couple of feet. I know after the last virus infected MY machine I was mad enough that I would have been happy to hear such a fate awaited the perp - although I suspect I would have been pushing for slow and painful rather than a quick end!

They might have a hard time enforcing that law, though, since they can't seem to find Osama bin Hidin inside their own borders let alone anyone outside...

Glass houses

" including stealing or copying, or attempting to steal or copy, classified information necessary to manufacture any form of chemical, biological or nuclear weapon. "

But isn't that exactly how they obtained nukes is the first place?

As it should be...

I'll bet that you and Gary didn't see this coming. Gary will be one lucky dud if he only gets 20 years in a U.S. prison. Pakistan has the right idea and hackers would be wise to not mess with them.

Good luck with this...

I agree hacking into sensitive files containing nuclear, chemical, biological information should be a huge crime, but GOOD LUCK proving it, let alone trying to put a death penalty to someone over this? Especially for this quote below...

"And the punishment doesn't just apply to Pakistani hackers. Foreigners will also be subject to the law whether they commit the crime from within the country's borders or on foreign soil."

Ah so india thinks they can just say what they want and rule with what laws they wish in the world? a HUGE LOL at that. I shook my head when i read this.

They have so many problems in that country as it is, how dare they say other countries have to follow their LAW. Especially trying to put someone to Death? And if you're falsely accussed, imagine the stress for yourself, your family, couples, kids, etc. GG india, now go away, we dont want you, we dont need you or your useless country.

Misread the conditions a bit?

He seems to be advocating the death penalty for those hackers who could be blamed for causing a death through their endeavours. McKinnon would have nothing to fear in this case, nor would the vast majority of other hackers in the world.

Give me a solid example of a hacker who could be blamed for a death due to their hacking and you'll have a name you could insert in that story instead. I think you'll be searching for a very long time though.
