Vista is Emperors new clothes!

Hi there!
After investing in a fat desktop custom made for music and video with XP Home installed, I needed a laptop to be mobile.
Since I love Asus I got one of their Laptops which should be shipped with XP. When it arrived it had Vista premium preinstalled.
Ok, I thought, lets try it out.
And it is a perfect OS, looks good and is like a dream to manage the family pictures.
Everything perfect.
Until I put it to work, BAM......
And Damn...!!
NOTHING worked.
Whats the point of Aero and all that shit, when it can't carry out simple tasks, and non of my programs were ready for Vista, not to this day!!
Pro Tools from Digidesign hasn't given thumbs up yet.
Then I tried to downgrade, but NO....
Only Buisness and Ultimate can downgrade.
What a wank!!
Its freakin' preinstalled, what choices are there?
And all this nonsense to have you push "Continue" for every little thing you wanna do, "You have no permission to open this file" is another classic, haha.
"Ask administrator bla bla, well I AM the freakin' Administrator, who's speaking?
So conclusion is, Vista is great, but don't even think the thought to use it in your work with ANY serious program, because it will not happen.
And Microsoft knows about it!!
If they pull XP away and Windows 7 isn't cutting it, then they screwed it for the sake of being "inventive", 'cause XP works great, don't push Vista in peoples faces before it really kicks ass.
Gonna by a Mac tower if MS doesn't solve this mess.

Thank you!

...open source is good, but it is not a panacea!!!

Most people would still rather go with a Microsoft solution than not. This is how they are 'educated'.

You could proclaim through all of the available testimony of evidence via the internet (and other sources), yet they still would choose Microsoft.

The reason why?

No matter what figures they give as regards R+D, you know they spend ten times that on advertising and paying certain people (Mr Enderle, we are looking at you) to eulogize their products.

Shills aside, Microsoft know they are on to a winner. The stupidity and apathy of their own customer base will see them well into the immediate future.

If you rely on Microsoft, you are pwned! All you need to know is how to write out that blank cheque...and nothing more do you need.

Vista: Longest suicide note in history

From Peter Gutmann, a Security Analyst

Executive Executive Summary

The Vista Content Protection specification could very well constitute the longest suicide note in history

The problem with Vista...

The problem with vista is not that vista is that bad; the problem is that Vista is not that good! I've used both, and I can say that you can easily use either one with confidence (with the proper configuration of hardware/software). The problem is that for most, the few "pros" that vista has over XP aren't really obvious to most people (UAC is considered a negative in some circumstances), and for many don't justify the added hardware requirements and learning curve.

Vista is fat and slow, reliable, but still fat and slow.

And where is proper 64 bit?

Why aren't drivers capable of running in 32 or 64 bit mode?

Shouldn't Windows 64bit be able to handle both drivers?

Come on MS, make the transition easy. I want to see a simple tick box list that will copy and install all my programs I select onto my new Windows pc. Stop giving me days of software installs whenever I get a new pc!

XP Rulez OK.

Vista runs OK if you add RAM and faster processor

It's funny how so many pro-Vista posts comment that Vista runs ok if you just upgrade to faster hardware with more RAM or whatnot.

The basic fact is that all tests show XP to be faster than Vista. Period. On a system with less RAM or with a slower processor, XP runs fine and Vista runs like a lame dog. On a system with huge RAM and a very fast processor, Vista runs 'OK' but XP flies like a bullet. Upgrading with more RAM or a faster processor makes the hardware faster - it simply makes the dog Vista limp faster. No matter what hardware you have, Vista is slower than XP.

Vista is a system downgrade. And that's not even taking the bad technical design changes under the hood in Vista.

Get your XP through the OEM channel

I am sorry if your PC assembler doesn't offer OEM copy of Windows when buying most of the parts / ordering a new PC (desktop or laptop).

If you want to stick to XP, please get yourself a modern mobo, a dual core CPU and a pair of decent quality DIMM sticks (2x1GB is a bare minimum nowadays). You don't really need anything better than the integrated graphics for 2D Windows GUI, photo / illustration / video / sound editing software and (Open)Office productivity.

If you can't get the OEM copy of Windows XP with the purchased hardware (a legitimate request), then I would suggest getting ASUS Eee PC with XP preinstalled, and borrowing the serial for your other PC, while reinstalling the Eee PC with the free Linux.

Do you own your business?

Cost of keeping XP is the cost of a used machine times number of employees with office, development, custom applications and of course, the IT department

or

Cost of moving "forward" is the cost of newer used machines + Vista upgrade OR new machines with Vista TIMES number of employees TIMES new training TIMES standard office, development and REBUILDING all the custom apps TIMES the IT department learning all the new bs AND supporting it reliably.

or

Cost of moving open source is number of new employees TIMES new training and ONE competent IT person...

hrm... Still have cold feet towards Open Source? While you're paying for down time, the open people are scooping up market share...

it works

OS Version: 5.1.2600 Service Pack 3 Build 2600
Original Install Date: 19/09/2006, 11:35:15 PM
Total Physical Memory: 2,047 MB

I dont run any security software, ran a full virus/malware scan for the first time in over 2 years the other day. Nothing but some cookies.

It works. Averages about 50 odd days uptime before I decide to reboot it. Why fix it?

...some Microsofties just don't get it!!!

Many people just do not like Vista, it is as simple as that.

Sometimes the reasons are one of aesthetics (an interface that has changes for changes sake).

Sometimes there is a genuine technical reason (software/hardware compatibility).

But I think what sticks in the craw of most Vista abstainers is that to perform the same task on Vista takes almost twice the resources as it did under XP.

Perfectly good machines rendered useless by Microsoft's poor software design.

And before anybody opens their browser to type a response to this comment, Microsoft themselves promise that Windows 7 will have none of these problems.

Microsoft acknowledged Vista's failings when they pushed it's successor into the media feeding frenzy to fuel the hype machine once again.

I think Microsoft and their minions should just admit Vista was a lemon and move on. Maybe Windows 7 will be what Vista should have been, pity that many of their most ardent users will have paid for it twice.

Vista 64bit? Not!

Vista 64bit is as useless as XP 64bit. Both have the same problems: Too few native 64bit apps available. Even Microsoft tools not available as 64bit versions. 32bit MS tools stop working properly. Only runs on very special combinations of hardware. Been there. Done that. Sucks!

Compare that to Linux 64bit: Distributors take care of all portability issues. All standard apps and tools available as native 64bit versions for years. Latest gimmick: Flash 64bit available for Linux only! If you want lots of memory and use it too, there's only one way to go: Use Linux!

But is Vista ever worth it?

I have a monster dual core Athlon whatever with 8GB of Ram and a 512MB 8800GT, older but still a fast machine.

Even on that, with Home Premium, I still had to turn all the settings down to "classic" to get decent performance. On my laptop, with Home Basic, I had to do the same to make it even usable.

Yes, there's hardly any blue screens, and most of my compatibility issues have been 32 bit versus 64 bit apps, but in general Vista has been awkward with the UAC kicking in every time I install anything and it took me a month figure my way around without a toolbar.

Vista is the return of Windows ME, and I hope Microsoft pulls their head our of their posterior and makes Windows 7 geared towards speed and usability, not changing everything up for the sake of change.

EFI and more RAM with Vista 64

Only must have features in vista 64 are more ram i.e. 16gb in 4 ram socket and 24gb in 6 ram socket motherboard using 4gb modules. Ram is much cheaper now and available in higher densities than it used to be. This also needs your motherboard chipset and bios being able to see more ram and having correct version of Vista 64. MSI & Intel claim to have motherboards which support efi or extensible firmware interface. The worst feature that came with Vista is OEM licences. The OEM versions of Vista are tied with your motherboard meaning, if you upgrade your computer , you shell out for vista again and cannot reuse your old vista licences.

Oh Please for the love of god....

Vista isn't as bad as EVERYONE makes out you know.

64-bit runs flawlessly with 4 Gb ram and a Q6600 and a 3 year old 7800GT graphics card.

Just because some people had issues with drivers for their antique hardware like scanners and printers, vista get's a kicking and everyone sticks with XP.

I notice people like to upgrade their anti-virus packages to the latest and greatest versions to protect from internet spead nasties, so why don't they keep this mantra with their operating systems?

Weird huh ?

What incompatible software?

Oh come on! I think there are many reasons to stay away from Vista - but compatibility surely is not a common issue (any more). I understand that some business specific software may struggle because its development ceased ages ago and the developer has since left the business or went off to focus on more lucrative software (e.g. for Vista).

For the vast majority of consumers, everything you can reasonably expect to run (even my old PS/2 printer driver) works.

Title should also include...

The title should also say Punters buying PCs to avoid Mac's. lol. I've run Vista on my Dell m1210 since shortly after it came out and it runs great. Resumes from suspend in seconds, hardly ever crashes and I've yet to find any of my software that doesn't work with it. Quit using dos-based dbase software and maybe you won't have a problem.

N/A

If the likes of DELL, HP etc released PCs with decent motherboards that didn't kill the rest of the hardware example a INTEL CORE 2 E4500 series with 800FSB on a 533 Max FSB board and using lower 533mhz DDR2. It would would probably run it a bit better thats the spec of my friends PC he got from Curry's and it was struggling and it was 2GB as well with a 8400GS 256mb PCIE card.

I mean before I sold my parts I tested VISTA Ultimate SP1 my rig was a AMD 3800 X2 939 2.0ghz, 2GB PC3200 DDR, 250GB SATA HDD, 8600GT 256mb PCI-E and it ran smoothly and I got 4.8 out of 5.9 in index score far more than I expected.

BTW, I was once seriously eyeing an Acer Turion X2 laptop until I found out it doesn't come with XP drivers.

bingo, that's me

I couldn't help but exclaim "That's me!" when reading the article. When I occasionally buy a thinkpad for my friends, I have to scour the bay for a reseller with a stock of XP-stuffed models, since lenovo does not offer XP or would charge more for it.

Makes perfect sense really

Times are tough for most people and you can get a perfectly good enough laptop running XP for a good price. Of course, no one can stick with XP forever but in the current climate, if it does what you need at a price you can afford then why not?

Also, it's great news for me too as I have a new laptop and two XP Pro ones to sell, so it's nice to see there is demand :)
