It's funny how the customs get the blame for doing the job they are SUPPOSED TO DO: identify the goods going across borders, tax them appropriately according to complex regulations that any reporter would die trying to understand, and preventing the "bad stuff" from passing through.

yet for some reason there's the Demerjians of this World who think the customs should be a big pipe where everything passes through, unchecked, in other words just 
"rubber stamp, move on, nothing to see"...

That isn't the way things are supposed to be. The internet does NOT mean the end of borders and border controls by the nation-states.
