Why we now have FOUR 8800 GTS cards on the market is beyond me: 
8800GTS (320MB)
8800GTS (640MB)
8800GTS (640MB, 112SP)
8800GTS (512MB, 128SP)

In they refreshed the 7 series, they just changed the 78xx to 79xx. But no, doing the same thing would actually mean having similar naming conventions between generations; a practice apparently forbidden at nvidia.
...GTS has a 384bit mem interface instead of 256
