IBM argues that the reason for not opening the OS/2 code are "a variety of business, technical, and legal reasons". Well, this s just like saying nothing. First they are not reasons, but excuses, since every single one of them are avoidable. Second it raises the suspicion they they simply cannot because some malicious code got in way of OS/2. Third, why would anyone want to get into OS/2 while Linux and BSD are already in full motion? If there is any special tecnology that the GNU can profit, they would have already realeased it. Just some thoughts of mine.
actually windows new technology is the bastard son of of OS2. Theoretically if OS2 went open source it might be possible to have an open sources OS that could run windows code. However that would split the support for Linux and might mean Microsoft gets another 5 year lead just when Linux is managing to gain ground on the dektop
As I recall, OS/2 was the bastard child of an unholy union between IBM and Microsoft. Odds are that the primary reason for not releasing OS/2 source code is that it probably still contains Microsoft intellectual property.
Acutally Windows NT is the bastard son of VMS from DEC of fond memory...
