Not quite

Phil, the term you are describing is actually called 'in the can'. Canned is exactly what they said it is.

Bad title

In case you didn't know, "canned" in film terms means that the movie is finished. As in sitting in the can waiting to be processed for release.

Well for the rest of us

Canned means put in cold storage, never to be seen again. So the title is fine for me.

That being said, I find amusing (well, not really) that once again Fox is being nailed for drowning a project for which it has the IP.
Anyone remember Aliens vs Predator ? Great game, rather original, it had swept up a grand following of enthusiasts ready to devote years of their time to skinning, levelling and modding.
Except that Fox sent nasty legal letters to each and every person that used any of its "IP" on their website - to the point where the projects were stopped for fear of even mentioning the name.
Really, I think it is the bigwigs at Fox that should be canned, and in 16oz cans at that.
Bunch of morons couldn't handle a fan base if it was given to them gift-wrapped.

@Pascal

Yeah they also totally destroyed Firefly too.. They do seem to have a blind spot where it comes to recognizing potential hits.
