I've seen speeches of Hitler on old footage and he actually did use such rhetorics, saying things like "we don't WANT war, we just need to protect the 
safety and freedom of our people". 

(yeah I know bush said it too but hitler said it first)

So it's not far off, and yeah you are right, nobody DID dare say anything when it happened, several times.

In fact, that was one of their arguments.
