I can still hear this crap at the age of 34 and it makes me want to brick the shop window not move on.

Also some half-wit in my street has one linked to a security light so when you walk past the house the light comes on and so does the tone.

Really harrassing.

The mosquito had barely made it into commercial use in the UK when the first kid in my wife's class (in a US school) had it as a ring tone.

You can't win like this. I don't know why people try. Its easy enough to defeat using foam earplugs, anyway.

The trick is to find out precisely what sound wave pattern these devices emit. Then, people could construct devices, either earphones for personal use or speakers for wide area effect, that generate a counter wave pattern to destructively interfere with and cancel the noise from the Mosquito. 

I've heard that this trick is already in use in many airports where there are large speakers mounted that blast out sound to counteract the noise from jet takeoffs and landings. The net effect on the ground is a relatively much quieter tarmac as the two noise sources mostly cancel each other out.

But the headphone method would be the best way in this situation.

The Mosquito is a waste of funding, and Councils are negligent, until the equipment is improved so as to also emit ultrasonic noises that most rodents find intolerable and will avoid if possible, for mice & rats, spiders, ants & creepy crawlies & mosquitos, cats, rats, squirrels, rabbits, dogs, badgers, deer, wolves, owls, hawks, coyotes, foxes, weasels, etc.; whatever may suffer an ole vole. Then that will leave the beach to the old crabs. It never ceases to amaze me, that so-called do-gooders, but chiefly, politicians, have but only one purpose in life; and that is to knackernoy the great unwashed in to a collective miserable piss-take. Holidaymakers of all shapes, families and sizes, should be allowed without the nuisance of a rozzer up their ears. 
If God intended for yoofs to need an Aural HyperVole-iser, then Mighty Soft would have made them one. So Cornwall should be dumping lazy plods, making the most of those they keep and bragging about how "green" Policezeath is. Cornwall Beaches are to be avoided like the plague; Mosquitos bite and carry feverish diseases. Both Yob and Bird Flu.

So for all those shop owners with them installed.... I will take my hard earned dosh somewhere else....

I get frequent headaches and have very sensitive hearing....those things don't irritate me they Hurt...my head throbs... 
I am not one to sue...but I do speak with my wallet.... 
also If you don't want trouble from youngsters don't purposefully hurt them down right stupid... treat them like adults and they will act like it... they will live up or down to your expectations.
