The version of BitDefender that doesn't work with SP1 is one version removed from the current. BitDefender's solution appears to be to offer a free upgrade to their latest and greatest...

Anyway, it's mostly 'security' suites which, I'd guess, are doing what MS told them not to do - patching the kernel. Microsoft aren't so clear about it as they should be, but they consider only those APIs that are published on MSDN Library, in the Platform SDK and Device Driver Kit sections, to be supported. Anything else can and probably will change. Use some trick you've discovered, and it will most likely break in the next release.

Windows Vista SP1 gets Windows Server 2008's kernel, which is why things have broken.

For a service pack that's quite a small list of incompatible applications, and out of those there are only 3 that don't have patches or an upgraded SP1 compatible version available. Storm in a tea cup?
