Absolute bullshit. Six years after release the Cray 1 was updated to the Cray 1A which had an absolutely pedestrian 12.5ns clock, 80 Mhz. Seymour Cray never successfully built a machine faster than 500 Mhz, the Cray 3, and he never shipped it at that.
Part of the problem with the Cray 3, apart from the fact that he couldn't get it built, is that the DEC Alpha EV5 was almost exactly as fast and DEC sold it for $2000.
