ubuntu 9 and 10 for AMD64 still not "there" yet

I'm truly disappointed with ubuntu 9.10 and 10.04 for amd64, they completely refuse to install or even run the live cd with 512mb ram. I upgraded to 2g and still many issues including some that come up in google searches far back as 2002. I won't bore you with the details but after several weeks of trying to get a 64 bit distro running on a desktop I am ready to put XP back on and sell it at a loss on craigslist. What's the point of releasing a distro if it is not compatible with the hardware you CLAIM IT IS compatible with???
