On further reading, it is going to be a mod done to them to support the "NextG" network, and indeed Telstra have been advertising 40mb/s+ for connections, of course the fastest ANYONE in the country has been able to archive is closer to about 1-2mb/s, to put it bluntly, I will believe that speed if/when Telstra can show me a normal handset (not a high altitude aircraft with high gain aerial) achieving it.

Yeah, about that 3G

Well, that's a can of worms.

You see our monopolistic telco, Telstra, don't actually have any 3G towers up, they made up their own tech called NextG that is a butcher job on 2G standards.

So, this leaves the provider of iphones as either optus (a good coverage of metro and even some rural centers) or vodaphone (frankly, dismal coverage, capital cities only).

And here the rumor was that Telstra would be the ones bringing the iphone to aus, that would of course require apple to make a special unit that adheres to the "2.5"G network they are desperately trying to convince people is "good for them", despite the lack of regular phone model support and the vendor lock in.

..your f'n kidding..

..3G, as I have already said, is ATM totally ignored(and overpriced) by the majority of Aussies, some businesses aside - who wants to be seen picking your nose or toileting whilst on the phone to mother? As for b/b in Aus in general, it is rubbish for most and to expect to deliver 42Mbps(About 6MB a sec, phtt!) over wireless when ASDL2/cable rarely hits 15Mbps(more like 8Mbps max) is both a lie and if @all true an insult. Yes, the infrastructure has differences but server/proxy bottlenecks effect everyone - something I doubt even Cuppercino can fix...

I've also heard it cures cancer faster than any doctor

And unconfirmed reports that it also converts CO2 and will solve all global warming by next summer. Apparently the CO2 conversion is powered by the smug waves emanating from the iPhone owner.
