How much bang for zero bucks?

Considering the PR value, I suspect these companies get their chips for free in exchange for a public announcement, so they'll "switch to AMD" whenever they need to expand their server farm, and then back to Intel, and so on.

Caches

There are some constants in the AMD v Intel war: litigation, FSB/memory controllers, and caches. Some poorly designed (or software designed specifically for Intel chips) does work better on Intel. For example, I have seen the latest version of that other OS run well on an Intel chip with a 2MB cache while it was plainly sluggish on an AMD64 X2 with 512 MB cache.

Intel has improved performance per watt considerably since it lurched ahead of AMD on the nanometre scale.

But AMD is still in the game. Their architecture is superior if they can produce chips at the finer resolutions with larger caches. I have been using AMD exclusively for years keeping the playing field competitive by supporting the underdog. My performance per dollar/watt is satisfactory if I do not buy the top end.

Titanic 2

Brilliant, maybe AMD can lent it processor power to make the sequel: Titanic 2 ???

With Opterons as cool as an iceberg but with a captain "dementing" Hector on the bridge it's sure it's gonna sink a 2nd time...

As for the remaining crew: there are not enough pink slips...euh...lifeboats, so first in the boat first out :)

INQ Poll

Authorities in several countries raided Megaupload recently, shut down all of its services, seized hundreds of servers and arrested several of its executives on criminal charges.

Do you think the move was justified?
