I'll let you guys in on a little secret. Intel has lots of money, lots of PR, and the ability to process more data. Assuming of course, that that data doesn't use up a lot of bandwidth. I'm not an expert on computers, so I'm not totally sure whether the bandwidth problems have to do with on chip transfers or paging to RAM.

(Bunch of stuff deleted because it wouldn't mean a damn thing to 99% of you.)

Intel has a problem that AMD very much needs to crow about. I've discovered in the past that even if a processor is at a 100%, if there are bandwidth problems, one 100% isn't the same as another. It is very possible that AMDs low benchmarks are a bit of an illusion when high bandwidth apps are involved, and when high bandwidth apps that have the ability or need to max out the entire cpu while processing are desired to be fast, AMD could very easily be David, and Intel Goliath for things like gaming, video processing, and other types of stuff that need a lot of bandwidth.

I don't have any stats to show, but when you have to put two instances of a program specifically on Core 0 and 2 and leave the other cores idle in order to maximize throughtput(I'm talking about a specialized program I run), there are bandwidth problems.

Your Mileage May Vary

I have an E6600 which is a 2.4GHz quad-core and it has 2GB of 800MHz. I don't know the timings, but if you want me to run specific benchmarks, I'll look them up for you. I run a Linux computer (Ubuntu 7.10) which might make you suddenly decide you don't care about my benchmarks, but if you are on the Freenode IRC network irc.freenode.net, I'm either jasong or jason1. Drop me a line and I might be able to run some actual benchmarks for you. (After I verify with my friends that the benchmark stuff isn't a Trojan. Since it's Linux, trojan's are about the only thing you need to worry about, unless you're stupid)
Y in the hell ship a broken cpu. Very uncool AMD. Hold on to ur broken silicon for a new set of boobs cuz ur looking like one. To think I am using a fx55 o/c'd to 2.8 ghz....and how will the phenoms do? Just go to newegg and have a look at the reviews. Dont bet on o/cing this revision.
Perhaps the big announcement is that they might actually get some 3780's into the UK, or, improve the management by replacing Hector with ex Commodore staff.

I like AMD but they should really stick to what they are good at. Making CPUs for gaming and entry level CPUs. I still dont under stand why they bough ATI over Nvidia?...that seemed like a better fit. They should leave the server side of things alone.
AMD ships something like 13+ mil chips a quarter, "hundreds of thousands" is peanuts - it's something like 1-2% of total production or the equivalent ~2-3 days worth of production out of a quarter.

For a company to be at 1-2% conversion, 4 months after the most important launch of 2007 is laughable and not something most would brag about. If the plan was to achieve this milestone and they are "tracking" to it, then maybe they are correct the problem is not the production, it's the PLANNING and the executives!

Why does the press have the complete inability to put things into perspective and ask the tough questions?
Actually one of the surprises (not sure how many there were) was the launch of the new FieGL V8650 with 2GB of memory.

Didn't really expect much of a surprise because sites like the InQ leak so much ahead of time it not like they could've slipped in an HD3900XTX launch or something. Like is anyone surprised about what nV will launch tomorrow/Tuesday?
Although I'm all for good news from AMD, if that was the "surprise," then I'm quite disappointed...

Ah well, maybe next time...

I want some Phenom FX lovin'!!!

I so hope that the fairytale by IBM is true, that "hundreds of thousands" of Barcelona processors are on their way to the "Busted Chips Make Great Solar Cells" factory.

Heaven knows AMD has shipped so many press releases it is about time they make up for it -- somehow.

I can imagine vast arrays of Barcelona solar cells, real green chips, at long last living long peaceful and productive lives in a magical fairyland where TDPs and TLBs are nothing more than faded memories of a distant troubled past.

Here amongst the hectares of Barcelona chips gone to fairyland also lives an old man, a dreamer, on a tired old horse. His broken voice, once smooth, recounts the tales of a terrible war against an ancIeNT EviL. He walks his horse to the edge of bright field of shining chips and says to any who can hear, "This is my kingdom, the shining land of Barcelona. No evil can touch me here."
I was really hoping AMD was going to announce that they beat Intel to the 45nm parts and that the Phenom was kicking Intel core 2 quad's butt. I guess that's only a dream, keep it up AMD and maybe you'll drive yourself into the floor the way your going, then everyone will have to shell out hundreds to intel for a sucky processor(Basic ones).
For those who cannot remember the prices of newly released 286 or 386 or 486 processors: Competition is a good thing and needs support by us as well unless you want to go back to the Intel empire and buy a 386 for nearly a thousand at release time.
Sad. It is sad when he biggest surprise you can muster is doing what you said you were going to do, is it not? I SO BADLY want my lil' guys at AMD to KICK iNTEL's BUTT! Really!!. This has been a sad year for us both AMD. Come on people! SHow us you can OVER-ACHEIVE!!
:) Remember it's in the details.
well, i just got mailed, that phenom 9700 is available in India from my dealer. maybe those 100s of 1000s includes 99% phenom and almost no barcelonas ;)
"AMD will surprise on Monday"

So is this it ?

Was hoping for something more grand, like 3.4, 3.6, 3.8 Ghz dual cores in 65nm.. or very soon faster quads without bugs =)

The only surprise seems to be the Inq, who said there would be a surprise. Better go back and spank your sources......
If this is the surprise no wonder you didn't put your name to it, Inquirer staff?, you muppet..

The European PlayStation 3 campaign could use this kind of PR.

The Surprise is the new FirGL HighEnd V8650 professional card. It's better than NVIDIAs counter part and way cheaper

greets

Surprise! There is absolutely no problems at AMD. Everything is Business As Usual. Move on, nothing to see here.

Yep. Uhhh huh.

It said amd will surprise late on monday didnt it? if so thats not the 'big' news today.
It's too early in the day in the U.S. to have made the announcement right?

I suppose that with all of the really bad news coming out from them, anything else is good news. This seems to be the best they can do.

Man I hope this was just a press release and not the Surprise announcement.

I had already called up all the AMD fanbois...
