How do AMD and Intel compare on performance these days?

For £150 which is the faster quad core processor for games? I see the Intel quad core 6600 available overclocked at 3+GHz, does the AMD priced equivalent offer better, worse or similar performance?

For future upgrade possibilities which is going to be the socket with the longest life? I don't want to get caught in a dead end like I have with socket 939.

Are AMD or Intel's latest sockets due for a change in the next 2 years? I say 2 years because I think that within 2 years I would probably buy an ugraded processor, provided they still made one for that socket.

Oh the insanity

AMD now has 4 quad core parts within $30 of each other?!? Why? Why buy a $180 processor if you could buy a faster one for $186?

There are 4 dual cores within $27 of each other, and that's without the rumored 'new' 2.3GHz Phenom dual core.

Just imagine if they clipped out one of the tri-cores and one or tow of the quads and raised some of the dual core prices (which are high volume parts) by $2-5... do they really sell that many tri-cores?

The more parts AMD introduces in the quad and tri regime, the further they suppress the prices on their high volume (and money making) dual core parts. When is someone going to realize throwing away at least 1 tri-core and quad bin will actually enable AMD to MAKE MORE money.

Limping chip

It may have three cores, but when it was originally targeted to have 4 and failed yield tests, it was sold as "triple core.....I think I'd rather have two solid cores rather than three with a dead one hanging off the edge.

WATER Found On MARS.

Yes, its' True, Hisum Great Imperial Royal Majestical Sultan mentioned that in theINQ last thur. Intel followed suit on Monday. Intel however, has those Top end $1,000+ parts, while AMD seems content selling to Real Market.

Heres link to see video Water on Mars:

"The biggest percentage cut is the Phenom X4 9750, falling just shy of 21 per cent from $215 to $170"

Unless you count the X3 8750 at 23.43%.
