I reckon I would do the same except it would be grabbing the NAS.

There are old scanned letters from both wars and all the family photos on there.

Might be worth keeping a portable HD at someone elses house I guess...
If he'd had an Apple with a .Mac account and used the backup software it provides, he could have had all his porn safely saved in Cupertino.

This is why keeping all really important, non-replacable files on external hard drives kept in fire proof lock boxes are a good idea. Seriously just such a lock box will only cost you about as much as an external drive does.
While the machine itself could be easily replaced, the same isn't necessarily true of the data held on it. Perhaps just his pr0n but the idea of there being important work-related files on there as well isn't beyond the realm of possibility.
Just an honest man trying to save something valuable and irreplaceable. Obviously, disobeying the orders of emergency personnel is illegal but I think he will get a very minimal punishment.

morally, he is in the right because we cannot say whether or not the data he was saving was important or not. I would have done the same to my work and home computer.
Maybe, in this digital age, that PC contained the only copies of important documents, records or family photographs that he didn't want to lose? It really doesn't seem so surprising if he'd ran back in to fetch a paper photo album or a box file of letters and bank statements.

Yes he may have had a backup - on an external hard drive next to the nicely warming PC.
I can't really say anything bad about this guy. I mean I would do the same for my PC or Guitar for sentimental reasons. He shouldn't receive any jail time, even though the fact he risked the firefighters lives. He should have to pay a fine. (But hmmm... Having to pay a fine after losing all your stuff.)

Next we'll see a counter story: Man rushes into burning house to burn his Windows Vista PC.

Can't blame a man for trying to save his pRon
Was the PC still working when he got it out?!

Can you get arrested for trying to save something from a building that's on fire.
My p0rn! My p0rn!
Somebody save my p0rn!!!
...
Ok. I'll do it myself then!
Was he shouting "pictures of (naked) women and children first!!!" ?
