In fact it would seem Facebook's entire reason for existence is as a social data mining enterprise.

Everyone with an account on a social site should realize that they cant expect privacy. You are willingly putting personal information online, if you dont want it there then remove it and close your account.

Isnt the whole point of your profile so that people can look at it?

Job Necessary

Facebook user data should only be available for those whom explicitly need it for their jobs. However, there's always going to be a small population of people supporting the site whom will need access in order to keep the site running properly.

However, there are probably no restrictions in place to make sure these employees are using the data in an ethical manner.
