An anti-depressent for dogs is being launched in the US. Yes, Prozac for pooches.
The madness already has a licence in the US and may soon to granted one on UK shores, something that should appeal to raving idiots everywhere. In an ironic twist the pill, which ought to contain two long walks and a bone to chew on, tastes of beef - something that in general usually cheers up a dog anyway.
Sensible people often say that dogs are intelligent enough to pick up on the vibes around them, and thus their mood is governed by their environment. This would mean to everyone but the quackiest vet that it's not the dog's fault, but its owners. So it may not be the best idea to confuse the dog even more by giving it a beefy pill and pushing it into councilling.
A report in the Daily Mail says that the pill is designed to be used to treat canine conpulsive disorder, something that involves chasing your own tail, excessive whimpering and excessive licking.
All things that could potentially be solved with a very long walk.
I have a 97 lb 8 month old Great Dane/St. Bernard. From minute one, 8wks when I got him, he was very fearful of all people that didn't live in our home and of other dogs. I have two other dogs and they all get along just fine. Now that he is so big, just a bit over half of what he will be full grown, he has turned to lunging, growling, barking, anything to make scary things outside his world disappear. There is no amount of training, walking or bones that will fix this problem unless I can get him to calm down with Prozac. I took him to a vet the other day and they told me to put him down. I took him to an animal behaviorist yesterday and she feels with the calm effect we can take baby steps to train him to not be so scared and protective. This is my only hope and prey it will work. He is so sweet and loving, not a mean bone in his body toward his family. If this doesn't work it will be a crate for life and a basket muzzle or death. I think I would rather try the meds. So, those of you who think we are crazy, maybe you could use a pill to get a grip!
I have a 2 year old Yorkie, in the last 23days I have spent $1,000 LITERALLY on things he has damaged. I cannot crate him because he does actually try to kill himself. I have put off and put off this medication. I leave from 7:00-12:00 and 1:00 - 5:00 monday through friday. I have cancelled any and all "extra" activities in my life ( I am 23) because I can't leave my dog at home alone. We moved on 3/8/10. He shredded the carpet by the front door, after about a week and a 1/2 I paid to have tile put down. He has eaten 3 sets of blinds (the apt requires i have them. I went home yesterday to find he has shredded the carpet around the tile. I had to crate him I cannot offord to keep doing this. Yesterday morning from 7:00-12:00 I sat and wondered what he has destroyed so far. yesterday from 1-3 (had to leave at three couldn't stand it) I wondered if my dog had killed himself in his crate. All of this took place WHILE ON ALL NATURAL CALMING MEDICATION,as well as the pheromone plug ins. I love my dog and could never give him up. He is as calm and undestructive as can be when I am home. So do I shoot him? Give him to someone who will probably shoot him? Put him to sleep? or medicate him? Yeah, I thought so.
Dog is cute
