Gran Turismo 5 racers take on a real life race car

Simulation versus reality
Mon Sep 05 2011, 11:29

RACING DRIVER David Coulthard has challenged gamers to a race between him in a real life race car and them on the Gran Turismo 5 equivalent.

The race will start at 3pm today and will see six finalists take on a real life Formula 1 driver in a Mercedes Benz SLS AMG. Coulthard will be in the real car and the gamers will be racing in a virtual version of the car in Gran Turismo 5 on the Playstation 3.

The time trial shootout style race will last for 15 minutes. Whoever sets the fastest lap in that time frame will be the winner. If one of the gamers comes out on top then they will win a trip to the Brazilian Grand Prix.

The track is a secret until later but it will be in the UK, presumably so no one can practice. Coulthard has won 13 Grand Prix races in his career so you'd think he would find this a breeze.

Coulthard said, "The real challenge is going to be to see just how highly skilled these online gamers are. The actual simulation technology will mean the cars are evenly matched."

He added that all Grand Prix drivers today will use a simulator to learn a track ahead of driving on it in real life. Maybe he should have just challenged them on the Playstation 3, but that wouldn't have been as much fun.

Couthard's co-commentator Martin Brundle will call the race later and said, "I think David Coulthard's got more to lose than the gamers. Let's see reality and the digital world and how close they really are." µ

The track was the Top Gear track in Surrey.

David Coulthard won the GT5 racers with his best time of 1min16.320.

Some say, like an amateur racer he spun off the course, and that he spent the entire session trying to stay on the track afterwards. All we know is, he is called Never-Was.
