Happy birthday Sonic

IT'S BEEN two decades since the gaming icon Sonic first appeared on our screens and he's not hung up his speedy red boots just yet.

Sega created the little blue hedgehog as a mascot to rival Nintendo's bright red plumber Mario and he's been running around a number of games titles across several gaming systems ever since.

Sonic has appeared on almost every console you might think of, from the Master System back in 1991 to the Gameboy Advance and all the way from the Sony Playstations to Microsoft's Xbox 360.

We even saw Sonic ironically jump to the Nintendo Wii and team up with his Nintendo counterpart in Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games in 2007. Something we wouldn't have put money on happening before it did.

Not all of Sonic's titles have been a roaring success, but we have to say that the vast majority have been solid and a few are undoubtedly classics. He's also made some cameo appearances in games like Super Smash Bros Brawl and Sega Superstars Tennis.

The next game to be released in the Sonic series is due out later this year. It's called Sonic Generations and combines new and old school gaming into one title for a 20th anniversary celebration of the iconic games character.

We all love Sonic at The INQUIRER towers and hope he will live on for a long time yet, to keep collecting those rings and chaos emeralds. µ
