Duke Nukem Forever gets mixed reviews

Fail to the king
Mon Jun 13 2011, 11:36

THE KING has finally arrived after a 15 year wait of tense anticipation only to meet with range of reactions, mixed reviews and varied scores.

Duke Nukem Forever has been out for three days but the reviews aren't glowing. Eurogamer gave the latest in the alien crazed shooter series a miserable 3 out of 10 and said, "Your time and money would be better spent reliving his iconic past than bearing witness to this gruesomely mangled resurrection."

The Guardian said, "If this was 15 years in the making, it makes you wonder what they did for the other 14 years and 10 months," and gave it an equally bad score of 2 out of 5.

Some other review scores included a 2 out of 5 from gaming web site joystiq, bit-tech gave it a more average 50 out of 100 whilst PCGamer looked more kindly on the king with a score of 80 out of 100.

There is even a thread on the gaming network Steam's forum entitled, "The king is dead". One user gives their opinion, "It is a mediocre shooter and only achieves its sales with its title." Some users were defending it, though, and one said, "Call me crazy, but I don't care about what critics say, I liked the game and nobody is going to change my opinion."

Another Steam user has started a thread named, "A thread for people who like the game?!" At the time of writing there is no response to their call for admirers of the game.

Whether or not the bad reviews and scores will affect the success of the game is another question. We think it depends on how you define success. What we can say is that it has already topped the gaming charts at chart-track.co.uk.

According the gaming chart web site the Xbox 360 has most of the format share for the Duke with 56 per cent, ahead of PS3 with 30 per cent and PC with 14 per cent.

We think that gamers will go out and buy the game anyway, even if just because of its history. We think it's bound to do well in terms of sales but if the reviews are correct about the poor game play then maybe it's one of those games that will go in the cupboard and be forgotten. µ

They missed the mark.

Like everyone else I have been waiting and waiting for Duke to make his comeback.
Played the all side scrollers and the 3D versions never was disappointed until now.
It seems they just took some of the old maps and made them more of puzzle solving maps. The graphics look fine on the PC but the Xbox 360 not so much... Who cares what the critics say ... It is the reviews by the public that I listen to... They usually have nothing to gain or loose by telling the truth. The PR and Game mags well I guess they do have to eat and get the free games...
All in All I would have bought the game just because it was Duke but I feel ripped at $50 for what would been more like a $19.95 game (hmm I did get a Duke ball cap so maybe $24.95). Hopefully there will be some great addons, to make it better like back the old days...
Duke plays pretty smooth on my PC so I can't complain about that... My big complaint is it doesn't have the feel of the old Duke Nukem' game play. I hope to see other Baby Boomers post a comment. Oh and for the record I am headed for the big 60 and still enjoy playing on the PC ... Thinking I will drag out the old Duke 3D and refresh my memory... Nuff Said out of this ole man.

Worth it?

I have been looking forward to this game since high school... more than half my life.
POLL: After 15 years, was Duke Nukem Forever worth the wait?

I definitely think so. Not so much the wait, but the actual playing of it.

how can someome do this ?

I get the feeling when they said that the game was finished to 85 % a year ago was a big lie, people have to take in the mind that the unreal engine wasnt made for giant maps not as the build enginemap what you could do was on gigantic scale- this is why I guess its simple or what you call ugly/rude and who wants fogmaps anyway ,not me.This happens when you do the biggest game with the smallest staff, I think Gearbox raped the game and MADE it to stupid because this was expected of the game- that why the owners had to go.

50/50

The only thing I can say is that I have alot of mixed feelings about the game. There are moments that I really get the Duke vibe, with all the badass talking and the enemies. But most of the time it's just the same enemies, really bad graphics and generic level design. Don't forget this is a game that is in development for 15 years now, so I think the critics that are giving bad ratings have a point. This plays, looks and feels like a low budget shooter, though I can understand the Duke fans dig it.

great fun game

No I don't hold shares in Duke; for me it's a waybackmachine from a time when games just needed to be fun for shoot'n things and talking smack. Next up: Red Neck Rampage Forever. I'm game.

the guardian is right

i games and gaming is a subjective matter but i have to agree with the guardian. This game was vaporware for so long all they did was take it back of fthe shelf, dust it, wipe it down and stick it in a box. honestly this game is 12 years old, is it fun? well mindless fun yeah I agree but when i spend 30 notes on a game I expect a touch more, it's not even a challenge. The voice acting is poor and the mysoginism over the top (there is a limit to where it just becomes too cheesy) graphics are poor gameplay on rails. Honestly if you have 30 quid to spend, go get something else, or save it for BF3

Also

it is not really surprising that a thread @ steam forum is empty if it is open 2 1/2 hour NOW. Right now it actually has quite a few entries...

Really guys, there are at least the same amount of "good" reviews out there, but people that already have made there mind up (partially BEFORE they actually played the game) seem to ignore them all together.

Personally I had a blast with this game. Is it the best game ever? No. Is it fun? Yes. Would I recommend it? Depends on the other Person.

Let's see...

The guardian games reviewers also panned Dead Rising 2 but gave the Thor video games one of the best reviews for that particular shovel-ware game, so we can see what level of journalism we are working with here.
