Sony is killing PSPgo to work on its Next Generation Portable

PSP no go

GAMING HARDWARE OUTFIT Sony said it will stop shipping its PSPgo to concentrate on its upcoming Next Generation Portable (NGP).

sony-pspgo-gaming-playstationIf you believe everything you read on the Internet, a couple of days ago there were rumours that Sony sounded the death knell for its badly performing PSPgo. Now it seems those rumours have been confirmed by a Sony employee in Japan.

The unnamed employee allegedly told Japanese website AV Watch that Sony isn't going to ship any more of its portable PSPgo gaming consoles.

We'll attempt to decipher Bing's not so great translation from Japanese. In essence, it said that production and shipment will stop and Sony will only sell the rest of the units left on the shelves. The statement also said this is because Sony is going to focus on bringing the NGP to market at the end of the year but the company will continue to support the PSPgo with repairs and firmware updates.=

We tried contacting Sony's UK PR team to no avail but the statement makes sense. The company might be the top selling gaming vendor in Japan but sales of the PSPgo bombed everywhere else.

It's a shame really, because this was one of the few occasions Sony that listened to its public and removed the terrible Universal Media Disc (UMD) drive in the PSPgo, but no one bought it. Sony also experimented with a new games download system after ditching the UMD, but that also failed to set the world alight. µ

Look at the PSP2

The PSP Go is a neat idea that's just not working for Sony, it just does not have enough added value over the PSP for the additional cost. However, I'm really exited about the new Sony NGP (PSP2), just look at all it can do...
