CONSOLE MAKER Sony has announced that it will give Playstation Plus subscribers cloud storage for saved games.
Sony announced that the option to store saved games on its cloud storage service will form part of the Playstation 3 firmware update 3.60. The ability to store games will be available to those who subscribe to its premium Playstation Plus service.
The $50 a year Playstation Plus service is the premium offering on Sony's Playstation Network, with users getting 150MB of online storage along with early access to game betas and demos. While 150MB doesn't sound like much, Sony claims it is enough for around 1,000 game files.
Sony's online backup service will allow Playstation 3 gamers to login from different consoles using their Playstation Network ID and have access to saved games. So not only will the storage act as offsite backup, it will allow gamers to take saved games around to their mates' houses.
Sony has limited use of its storage locker by only allowing copy-protected game saves to be stored on its service. Saved files will be accessible through the Playstation 3 Xrossmediabar, with the Japanese firm saying that gamers will be able to restore saved data once every 24 hours. µ
