MOMENTS AFTER a mod-device that liberates the Sony Playstation 3 (PS3) so it can run any operating system was banned by an Australian court, the secret was open sourced and made even more portable.
The net result is that it is now possible to jailbreak your PS3 using a tethered smartphone.
Hacker Kakaroto adapted the same jailbreak to the Nokia N900, and then his mates in the open sauce community ported it to the Palm Pre.
According to Electronista, there are plans to release it for the Iphone too.
The phones work as well as the dongle that was designed by Australian importer Ozmodchips.
This was based on a flaw in the PS3 software that catches the console on startup and inserts an exploit of a memory heap overflow vulnerability that defeats the blocks placed on what apps can run.
Although the jailbreaking appears to be a success, Ozmodchips is unlikely to survive. The modchips designed by the outfit have been seized and are subject to injunction by the Aussie court.
Sony has clamped down on the mod because it enables punters to run pirated software. However it has also been popular with those who want to run the Linux OS on their PS3. µ

Sony like M$ looses money on every console it sells.
poor sony,a unit that probably cost em 50dollars to build and slugging us a ridiculos amount of cash for it are crying cause someone hacked it,woopy woop, get over it,so you'll only make 3billion dollars profit instead of 5billion,get over it and let the people enjoy some fun
The reason I ask this is that I'm a distributed computing hobbyist, and it'd be great if I could run software OTHER than Folding@Home on my PS3.
Actually, even if they kick me off the PS3 network, I probably wouldn't care that much, since they'd probably still allow the ability to buy stuff. I mean they're capitalists after all, aren't they? Capitalists are hypocrites, which is a good thing in this case. For me, anyway.
I bought my PS3 to be a Bluray player, everything else is just gravy.
You must be new here.
It's used for Piracy, nothing more.
It will also lead to a console ban, as PS3 tracks the apps you run (including the backup manager) and uploaded it to Sony for the Trophycard.
it will be trivial for them to know if you have EVER used this ANYTIME you subsequently sign into PSN.
That is "source" not "sauce"!
