3D slider might appear for Playstation 3

Not taking notes from Nintendo

A 3D SLIDER that adjusts depth could be available for Sony's Playstation 3 if developers get their way.

Sly Cooper, a stealth action PS2 title, is getting remastered for a PS3 release this November and its developers want to add a 3D slider to control depth perception.

According to Kotaku, the developers are considering adding the slider to give users the ability to manually control the depth of 3D. The team probably saw how well Nintendo's own slider for its upcoming 3DS console went down at E3. Unlike the 3DS which has a Sharp built screen that doesn't require glasses, Sly Cooper in 3D would still need punters to wear stereoscopic headgear and have a 3D screen.

It makes sense. Regardless of what 3D equipment you use, everyone has an individual sweet spot to process the 3D. Getting it wrong can result in eye-strain, headaches and nausea.  Putting the onus of responsibility on the end user to find best 3D spot could also prevent potential litigation proceedings.

This is something Sony is all too aware of. Only last week Sony added a device use notice to its terms of use policy for 3D equipment. The company even added that parents of kids under six years old should consult a Doctor before using 3D.

"The vision of young children (especially those under six years old) is still under development. SCEA recommends that you consult your doctor (such as a paediatrician or eye doctor) before allowing young children to watch 3D video images or play stereoscopic 3D games."

While Nintendo might be the first vendor to supply 3D without glasses, Sony has an even more vested interest in keeping us tied to its 3D. Sony has a massive hardware and software 3D portfolio across its Playstation brand, Bravia TVs and much more beside. µ

No...

I think they more than likely didn't see the idea on Nintendo 3DS. I think more likely they are thinking along the lines of the already released and well known NVIDIA 3D kit that has a deapth wheel which works in exactly the same way.
