THE UPDATED CLASSIC Civilization 5 will come out to test the gaming skills of those seeking world domination on 24 September in the UK, and will have some big changes.
Talking to the BBC at E3, the developer of the game at Firaxis said that warfare in the game has undergone a big overhaul, while the influence of technology has been made deeper.
Dennis Shirk, the games lead producer, said that the new way of fighting battles has been influenced by games like the popular Total War series.
He said, "Artillery units now have a ranged attack, units can now automatically transport across water and the space race has been given an overhaul."
Civilization 5 has also removed the ability to stack units. This caused problems over realism in previous games because it allowed old or obsolete units to defend against attack by more modern units.
For example, think of a bunch or phalanx of spearman defending against a tank. Or even a rifleman with rather large guns.
Shirk said that this will not happen in Civ 5, with more technologically advanced units having the win.
Gamers who have spent days and weeks trying to get their nations to rule the world in any of its previous incarnations will be itching to get their hands on this game.
Civilization 4 was a big step up from Civ 3, so it'll be very interesting to see how Civ 5 will play and what else new it offers. µ

Always thought this was a better Civ game. Cooler then hell to use drop troops from orbit to attack behind the lines.
Civ2 is still the best in the series, 3 and 4 were bloody awful. All this diplomatic crap they brought in when you decide to nuke France is just an annoyance!
It's a shame CTP disappeared, that was a great successor to the original Civ's :( Guess back to playing FreeCiv as atleast it understands to keep power in my hands not those bleedin annoying politicians!
So what if the game isn't realistic down to the very detail? It's a computer game! It's supposed to be challenging and fun. It's not supposed to be a 100% accurate to scale mimicry of real life.
The problem with games like civilization is that they even allow one nation to have advanced warfare while another nation has sticks and stones.
In reality, people find ways to get machine guns and grenade launchers, even if they don't have the industry to build them or the knowledge of how they work.
