THE SOFTWARE COMPANY that loses big money on game devices, Microsoft is going to pull the plug on the original Xbox over its Xbox Live service tomorrow.
Wipe a tear and have a moment of silence fanbois. This means you can't crank up the ageing hardware for another session of Halo 2 ever again. If you're still a Halo 2 aficionado - and we believe there are many still out there - you might spend the rest of today saying goodbye before they put the old boy down.
What's more baffling to us is that Microsoft is also axing support for any original Xbox game online, even if it's played on an Xbox 360. It makes sense for the Vole to move its punters to an Xbox 360 environment but there are still tens of thousands of old school Xboxers out there.
We can't figure out why Microsoft needs to do it now. An online support structure for Natal is probably in research and development or private beta. Either way, Natal implementation shouldn't have a knock-on effect for Xbox live. And Xbox 360 users on Live are ticking over nicely. Why here and now unless Microsoft has something up its sleeves?
The latest "official" word on the matter comes from Xbox live general manager, Marc Whitten, from February.
"We'll share more details soon, but in the meantime I want to assure you that the best is yet to come for Xbox LIVE," Whitten blogged back then.
"I believe we'll look back on 2010 as a landmark year in gaming and home entertainment, and I couldn't be more excited about what we have in store with Project Natal and Xbox LIVE," he said.
Still, it doesn't seem to make any sense for Microsoft to shut down hordes of its loyal gaming users and shoot itself in the foot. Again. µ

I feel doubly screwed. My old and running x-box is dumped and the OS of the century, cough, Vista, which I use with no problem is going away..I'm a sucker
@edhe
sony had to take out the otheros option as the ps3's were being pwnd, both for pirated games but more importantly for govt agencies using them in clusters for things...
if they were gonna bring the xbx back they would have made an announcement they were upgrading the platform for the original shitbox.
Your removing my oxygen... I remove you now for my future oxygen use...
Are you a MS advertising monkey:
"It's not removing for removal's sake *cough other os cough*, it's removal of legacy for the benefit of the future."
Get real dude.
I hope you nailed sony for removing back compat and removing otherOS. Whilst they took those features away they didn't return anything for recompense.
This is different - they're wiping the technological legacy that the original xbox live had on the new system and will be able to re-factor the whole thing shortly. They're likely to be removing friends list limits and will be enabling lists, possibly clans and probably tying it all in with facebook and twitter so that you have a far more organic & social experience.
It's not removing for removal's sake *cough other os cough*, it's removal of legacy for the benefit of the future.
