Eee box virus triggers recall in Japan

Eeek!

TAIWAN'S MAJOR computer components assembler and netbook manufacturer Asustek has discovered a virus infesting all of its Eee Box PCs sold in Japan and is recalling them.

The virus is called "recycled.exe" and was loaded onto the systems along with the machines' software tailored for the Japanese market, according to ASUS representative Li Yusheng.

Hidden in the Eee Box "D" drive until the system is initialised by the buyer, the virus copies itself to the "C" drive and any removable or USB drives that are connected. It slows down the computer and might attempt to download more dangerous malware over the Internet.

Asus said it built only 4,500 Eee Box PCs for sale in Japan and, out of those, only 300 have been sold. The company said only Eee Box PCs sold into the Japanese market are affected. µ

Wow...

only 300 sold and only 3500 build?!!

I guess Japanese must really hate something about the combination of Asus, Taiwan and this kind of Laptop. Wonder what the main factor is...

Windows Virus?

Was this a Windows virus?

Too bad, they should have installed Linux. Oh well I guess it could happen to anyone, even those running Wine on Linux.

Serves them right

Serves them right. You wanted Windows on the Eee? You got it. I know that my linux Eee doesn't have this problem.
It's just priceless that they pay EXTRA for the privilege to be infected by a virus....

Comments quality or lack...

Three comments published on this article and all misleading.
Shorely the author must know that the Eee Box PC is a PC and not a notebook kinda affair.
For some of us there is a difference. And some of those do not keep tabs on all the hardware of t'day.

By reading the comments below some might assume that Eee Box is a Japanese Netbook (maybe even feat. many little compartments for the hungry labourer so that they have no more need for their Bento... because Asus wraps it "all in one").

My original thought beeing:
Have you stopped editing your comments or are the pickings that bad these days?
No more posts from the informed ones? Have all the intellectual smart fart Inq readers like myself fallen silent? Is Earth really not a giant disc?

(I mean shEeesh i could aswell read some forum posts...)
