Mozilla's Geode will keep tabs on you
Where am I?
MOZILLA will today launch Geode - a geotagging project which will control your physical location in order to enhance your browsing experience.
This plugin will be launched into Mozilla Labs and apparently comprehends location - making room for personalised and localised browsing content.
An example of how Geode will work is your typical nightmare scenario, you're looking for a hairdresser urgently as your child has got chewing gum stuck in their hair - but you're out of town and don't know the area.
Geode helps by loading up your favourite review site and quickly finds suggestions of hairdressers you might use in the circumference of a couple of streets - it will also give you directions to get there.
More details are scheduled to be released later on today - such as how Firefox will determine a location using Mozilla which has no GPS provisions.
We'll just have to wait for these gems of information, but worry not - as soon as we know, you will too. µ

That's not gonna happen!
"... which will control your physical location ..."I don't care how self-important the Mozilla guys believe they are, ain't nobody, especially a bunch a' computer nerds, is gonna control MY physical location.
Take your Geode and stick it, Mozilla-boy!
Duh?
"such as how Firefox will determine a location using Mozilla which has no GPS provisions."Uhm, IP geolocation?
lost
but how often do you get lost tho??bloody ell im lost again i better find out where my nearest hairdresser is..
Duh "Duh?"
Um Tim D, exactly how useful is an IP geolocation to someone when all it can do is track the IP to the service provider's location, which -- at best -- resolves an IP to a city? City-level resolution is pretty useless. It would be completely useless for mobiles too.Disgruntled
I freaking HATE the localization and regionalisation of internet, and it ALWAYS is in my disadvantage, and I will do whatever I can to block such crap, and if need be surf at dial-up speeds via goddam proxies, or more realistically: not at all.And I'm not alone in feeling it's bad news either I noticed.
