2008 physics Nobel Prize awarded
Better late than never
THE 2008 NOBEL PRIZE for Physics is shared by three scientists for unique discoveries in sub-atomic particles the prize committee announced today.
Yoichiro Nambu, a Tokyo-born American citizen, and Makoto Kobayashi and Toshihide Maskawa of Japan are the lucky recipients of this prize - honoured for separate work on spontaneous broken symmetries.
Nambu discovered the mechanism of spontaneous broken symmetry in sub-atomic particles, which granted him this recognition and half the $1.4 million award.
Kobayashi and Maskawa share the other half of the prestigious prize for their work on predicting the existence of three or more families of sub-atomic "quark particles" in nature.
The committee said that, "The fact that our world does not behave perfectly symmetrically is due to deviations from symmetry at the microscopic level."
Kobayashi was shocked at the news exclaiming that, "It is my great honor and I can't believe this," as although the award is being given now their breakthroughs came in the 1960s and 1970s.
The Nobel Committee for Physics at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences awards this prize as the second of this year's Nobel awards. µ

Was Dr. Ultee' Forgotten?
With ALL My TradeMarks, Pat Pend & Copyrights exclaimed on theINQUIRIER, I had So Hoped Ultee' Tom to Be this years Nobel Peace Prize Winner. Sort of Pulitzer of Peace. Oh,Well.Small force spins. as seen on XRAY, are due to massive Hunks of Matter hitting Each other Not Squarely on Head, Spinning other particle clockwise or counterclockwise. Such small Abnomilies do NOT explain Anything about larger world around them. Believe its Mistake to Honour Nonsense that isn't exactly true, at all. Its Possible Christ Presbyterian has begun to believe in Gob.

Huh... so what?
Huh... and here I thought that the reason Earth was barely functioning at all was because homo sapiens had become the predominant species. Now if the cockroaches had taken over.....Now I find out it's not even symmetrical. How depressing.
Must be nice able to spend your life on activities that mean absolutely nothing to anyone, except other equally useless parasites.
And for this they give awards? Well, it is the Swedes after all....They should have given up after inventing the blond....
...
@ Rich Wargo. As much as I want to rant endlessly on your ignorance, your post itself is easily the best possible indictment of the value of your knowledge and beliefs. Thank you for making that point so clear to so many
Yah I sent Kobayashi my pen
So I sent that guy my pen to honour his award, now my Wacom Bamboo don't work.THANKS A LOT.
Thank you
Thank you, Mr. Stone.I admit that trying to find the immediate use of basic research is difficult, but it must be done. After all, we would not be communicating in this fashion if it were not for basic research.
Indeed
@Joseph StoneWell said, well said.
Owned Rich Wargo
I would just like to add the following to Joseph Stone's excellent response:OWNED RICH WARGO!! FKN NOOB LAWL!! FORMAT UR PC NOW!!!
There is some part of the population...
... that lacks the vision or imagination to see what can come from understanding they way nature behaves.Figuring out why sub-atomic particles behave the way they do could lead to improvements in nano-technology, among other things.
Like the others mention, if it weren't for people like this, you would not be posting your ignorant remarks on this site.
