Fake chips could cause fatalities

China is cause for concern

US WARPLANES, ships and communications networks have become vulnerable thanks to fake microchips flooding into the western world from China.

Use of these fraudulent chips could be the cause of equipment failure which, depending on the equipment, could be fatal.

The worst affected companies include Boeing Satallite Systems, Raytheon Missile Systems, Northrop Grumman Navigation Systems, BAE, and Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control.

The US forces have been receiveing these components from insecure locations over which they have no control, compromising quality and safety.

The problem is that some military and aviation equipment requires custom microelectronics in relatively small quantities meaning that some manufacturers are unwilling to set up R&D or production lines to meet this need.

So component brokers are forced to source equipment from China, Hong Kong and Taiwan and have limited control over the quality of what they are sent.

What makes this problem even worse is the fact that the biggest semiconductor plant is being built in China, a country is notorious for virtually undetectable counterfeit goods.

According to reports, these counterfeit products are packaged as finished items, for instance a memory card or USB drive could be received from a branded company with a fake chip inside.

There are even reported cases of discarded substandard products being liberated from rubbish dumps, repackaged and put back into distribution.

The US defense department is so determined to cut costs that its use of Chinese suppliers is ever growing, meaning there's a risk of more sub-standard chips leaking into the supply chain. µ

Hrm..

So, in other words...who needs Skynet when substandard and fake chips can end the world on a whim?

Is not surprised

It's not surprised to see fake products for weapons from China. Acorrding to legend, more than 2000 years ago, a Qin's general (son of Zhao Tuo) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zhao_Tuo was the first one who made fake weapons and swap with the real on in Vietnam. Hence Zhao Tuo could defeat Vietnam. Now it's again that Chinese provide fake things for other army :-).

LoL!

So it seems the US are making a fuss over European technology for their Air Force (Look up on the recent tanker issue) and instead rather have 'Made in China' products such as these...

Fake funding could cause fatalities

Why do you think chicken parts are irradiated in the US? Don't worry, you won't find this garbage in the EU. Not yet. But do you really believe that China is the only place where substandard products are being sold?

Far more interesting would be the question whether there is a connection between the disappearance of high-tech jobs, the dramatic decrease of funding for education, research and science in the US, the increase of funding for so-called faith-based initiatives, the lobbying for the MAFIAA, for the banking pyramid scheme, for the oil industry, and the move against innovation.

The real question...

Will the U.S. government be saving money in the end once a $138 millon F-22 Raptor falls out of the sky from one of these things?

Hmm... spend an extra 30 cents or potentially spend an extra $137,999,999.70 trying to cut costs... hmmmmm...

Outsourcing?

....says it all really.

I think the articles overdoing the scaremongering myself. We're more at risk from problems with assembling lead-free hight density electronics....but you know how Journalists love headlines...

WoW

For this article to be written there would've had to been a lot of these fake chips popping, if it was a one of thing or a few chips we would not of heard of the problem so there must be a lot of these chips in service.

Old news.

I read an article 2 years ago describing the Walmart policy of the Pentagon with all the consequences implied by William Thomas. Not funny.
Check it out.

To some IDIOT comment for this INQ article

I saw some IDIOT always comment using their ASS instead of their BRAIN.

Do you know why it is BAD to have a counterfeited IC? Do you know the environment at which MANY military-
/aerospace electronics MUST operate?
Look at this link:

Now tell me:

AA. Do you want to board an airplane that
have their avionic system REBOOTED
every single time it flew? Do you know
the term FLY-BY-WIRE on ALL mo-
dern aircraft? Do you know it took a lot
of avionic to run this system?

BB. Do you want to have a missile that
hangs it's CPU every time the enemy
jammed it? And drop it's payload into
civilian home instead of terrorist cells?

CC. Do you want to have electronic in your
nuclear warhead to get hangs and
detonated itself after several years of
storage in your bunker? Cause it
exposed to radiation from the warhead
plutonium?

DD. Do you want your military hardware
to broke down after your enemy deto-
nated a neutron bomb above your
country? Remember space doesn't
have a normal country boundaries
like we have here on land.

And all of this caused by counterfeited IC's
from china?

-----------------------------------------------------

Do you think that counterfeit IC situation is
not BAD? Look at this link:

terfeit IC but THE WHOLE COMPANY?

They even counterfeit a LAW FIRM! Look
at this:

http://www.chinalawblog.com/2006/10/china_where_even_the_law_firms.html

You still know about melamine tainted milk
from China right? How about china's
dumpling with a carton paper made as it's
meat inside? Still not worry? How do you
value YOUR OWN LIFE? Do you still want
to drink the SAN-LU milk product from
China?

Still think it's not THAT bad?

Modern Warfare

Could well be a new tactic of Modern Warfare, no longer do people need to be a suicide bomber/ pilot.
Was it not here that I read about a copy Panasonic phone that ended up being better than the original when it was finally released?

Another word is replica

Which takes us to the word clone

What computers started out as being.

Faulty capacitors hit in early 2000/1 on motherboards and again more recently.
We've had so called pirated motherboards - or were they just out-sourced parts that were below standard and discarded as being pirated.

It all seems to come back to the part's OEM who has taken cheap shortcuts to increase the margin or win the contract.

Then like a politician claim having been wronged, thus changing the focus and escaping as the victim.

Heh

This rate, it will be safer to have windows vista flying/crashing the planes rather than some wee chip failing that turns up into down...

There was a movie/book about this, years ago...

I thought it was called DefCon -something-, but having looked around, that can't be it.

Story about, early Cold War, a computer failure ( blown relay, or something ) isn't noticed by the guy monitoring the thing ( a smoker ), and as a result a B-52 is sent into Russia.

iirc, the US President nukes one of his own cities to prevent Russia from nuking ALL of 'em.

What was that story called...

Anyways, it's good to know that that's *going* to happen, now.

Very comforting/reassuring.

isn't it?
