Sony defends PS3 and PSP sales

Doing better than it expected

DESPITE CLAIMS that Sony is losing the console war peddling its highly-priced PS3, the games console maker insists it is making a bob or two.

Sony CEO Jack Tretton said that sales of the Playstation 3 and the portable PSP are performing above expectations.

He said that the PS3 is selling 30 per cent better than Sony's targets and will hit 10 million units by March 2009.

Tretton told Reuters that Sony was going to be 100 percent up over last year which is about 30 percent ahead of where Sony "should be".

He said that even if the credit crunch bit into consumer sales, Sony will still hit its numbers.

One number it will not be hitting is the number one slot as it trails a long way behind the Nintendo Wii and Microsoft's Xbox360. µ

Seems fine...

I have to say that both seem to be doing just fine. Being teh proud owner of all consoles i have to say that the PSP is a cracking toy, if a little 'niche', but the PS3 is a class act as far as toys go. My favorite toy ever.

Misleading Article.

You might want to recheck this article, it's clearly misleading.

"Sales of the PS3 are currently 30 per cent better than Sony's targets, clearing the way for the console to hit 10 million units by March 2009."

According to Sony's own sales figures, they reached 14.4m units back in July!!!

I don't know what that number relates to (North American or European only sales, or 2008 only numbers) But it's clearly not total global sales numbers like the article implies..

Clearly the foaming Xbots will be all over this dodgy news like a bad rash...

Wrong comment

One of the main criticisms levelled at the PS3 is that it's too expensive, so for them to claim that they're making a profit just proves that they're in a position to compete more on price, but not willing to, perhaps because Blu-Ray won that format war so they have a unique selling point.
In the UK, where we're paying significantly more than some other areas, that just looks like gouging the customers.

Bluray killing PS3 sales

I wonder if the extortionate costs of Bluray films is the reason for the slow uptake of the PS3?

I know of a number of people who purchased a PS3 just to watch Bluray films instead of as a games console, however the films now cost anywhere from 2 to 4 times more on Bluray (£25 for new releases in HMV). I suspect this is putting a lot of people off buying, especially now that most DVD players upscale existing media to within spitting distance of Bluray quality.

For Gods Sake

Of Course PS3 is going to be behind 360 it's been out longer than PS3 this console war stuff is getting totally stupid if they all launched together or nearer like they used then fine but you can class this a war when 1 was a year behind and 1 launched early. Microsoft did si to beat Sony on the next gen level because they thought Sony where going to launch PS3 soon.

But they delayed it due to blu-ray diode and microsoft rushed it who really benifited Sony because the delay gave them time to build quality over quantity. 360 was SUPPOSED to be the same and look what happened on that Red Ring of Death due to it been rushed and Pete Moore even stated that. He stated the hardware department came up with something and they just chucked it as the software people and said build something with that in small terms.

Sony will drop prices next year maybe when KillZone comes out all the price cuts from MS have been all on panic. It's a good system to have if upgrading but you need to also add hardware online play it nearly adds up to a PS3 which in turn has free online play.

Yeah.

Right now I just don't have the PS3 in my crosshairs. It's either an Xbox 360 or a Wii, but I'm banking more towards the 360. The Xbox offers comparable graphics, a great selection of games, and a lower price. Not to mention (subjectively) better looks. And with the Xbox's soaring sales, game developers would be foolish not to port their stuff to it.

I do NOT beleive FONY anymore and I doubt I ever will.

All they do is lie their *sses off and the sad part of all of this is that there are people that fall for this b*llsh*t.

The P0S3 is the worst of the current generation of consoles. 'Nuff said!

Jumping to conclusions

Technology in computing is like the ever changing seasons. Forever developing, evolving and revolutionary in many aspects. That said, to say any one console is the absolute winner is fool hardy at best. People like us who read and comment on websites such as The Inquirer are a little more savvy and aware on current issues and development that go on in the tech world. I treat the console competition like I do politics. I vote for a government that serves my interests and provides the best possible outcomes now and in the future through effective policy... Microsoft and Sony have products that provide similar attributes under the hood, but appeal differently to consumers in the same way, by offering something that the other does not have.

Yes, the PS3 is more expensive, but it's visual appeal with the rest of my decor in my home is seamless. For me it is looks, where as for others, it would be gaming or multimedia appeal.

Who knows, in the future Microsoft will release a product that may appeal to me, but until then I am happy with the purchase I have made.

Remember... the general consumer see things through rose coloured glasses in the tech world... they just want it to work, look good, provide entertainment with little mechanical down time.
