Big Blue claims virtual desktop storage breakthrough
And the people virtually rejoiced
BIG BLUE BOFFINS claim that they have cracked the code on virtual desktop storage that will cut storage costs by up to 80 percent.
IBM is showing off the technology at the VMWorld conference in Las Vegas this week.
It said its "Virtual Storage Optimizer" ushers in a new phase of "cloud computing" which gives end-users access to the critical information they need remotely, from any device, anywhere.
To do that it needs to sort out the storage part of the desktop which takes up a lot of room.
It said that VSO is based on an algorithm developed by IBM Research.
It reduces the large physical storage requirements of storing virtual images and allows organisations to streamline operations by creating new desktop images in mere seconds or minutes. Currently it takes half an hour to create and deploy new virtual machines.
VSO will be sold as part of the menu of services available through IBM Global Services. So no word on cost or when it will hit the streets. µ

What'd they do?
Buy a bunch of VirtualBox licenses? Because that sounds like it would accomplish what you're talking about. Another thing they could do, assuming they just want to shuffle data around, is make a really big Linux server farm. Wouldn't take much cpu at all to let people shuffle data around over the web.Now, if they want to process the data while it's still on the server, that's a whole different kettle of fish.
