Samsung knocks the Air out of Apple
New X360 claims lightest laptop throne
THE LATEST LAPWARMER from Samsung X360 has won the title of the lightest notebook around, beating Apple to a pulp and taking the magic out of Voodoo.
They claim it’s the most weightless of the 13.3-inch screen portables to date, coming in at just 1.27kg. With their new found competitors, in the MacBook Air and the HP Voodoo Envy 133 weighing in at 1.36 kg and 1.53kg, respectively.
Although it’s not slimmer than any of the above with an 8.97-inch depth, it still comes darn close, with the Envy size up at 9.04-inches the Air at 8.97-inches.
Although it doesn't mention its competitor directly Samsung does allude to the fact that that its product is smaller than Apple's in size, trying to get away with some cunning stunts in word play, such as "fully featured and lighter than air" and also "A 13.3 inch Slim Lighter Than Air Notebook."
The X360 comes across with the look of a business laptop, with a biometric fingerprint reader and trusted platform module authentication. This is along with support for Samsung docking station, which just screams office-based to us.
Then they throw a curve ball from left field, with a built-in HDMI socket and integrated 1.3megapixel webcam. All that and they go and leave out of the Montevina chipset switchable graphics, leaving it with just a basic Intel Graphic Media Accelerator X4500 graphics core onboard.
Still, it’s powered by a 45 nm Intel Core 2 Duo mobile processor, running on a six cell battery that boasts up to 10 hours continuous use.
So, how does the cost of the X360 fair compared to the fruit based company's offering? In the UK, Apple's Air is coming in at £1,462 with a 64GB SSD while the new Samsung is set to cost slightly more at £1,499 but with a 128GB SSD, when it arrives later this month. µ

(My $600 11" Everex features Intel duo and weighs under 4 lbs -- sure it's a crummy brand, but the computer itself is good -- yes, I had to ditch 1 lb of dunnage to match the weight performance -- so lets all just try to get along here shall we)

I'll take this thing over a Macbook Air anyday, considering how Apple charges an arm and a leg for upgrades. Still, big kudos for Steve Jobs for being the visionary that he always was. He just manages to surprise everybody with almost every product launch.oh, THAT's what they mean..

You can have a 1,4 kg Sony Z-series laptop, with the latest specssince a few years now. So what's new? And BTW, it comes with a dvd-burner, network connections and a decent harddisk. Or were you making a comparison between more expensive and lack-of-features products?Not a curve ball
In business, plenty of people are sick of using crappy VGA output to a monitor, and HDMI=DVI with a $10 cable (not to mention that a VGA connector on a laptop like this would not work because of size). Many people are using skype and doing video conferencing for business. Both HDMI and the webcam makes perfect sense.
