THE IPOD that fruit-scented blessing from the great Messiah Steve Jobs, could be a teen killer.
According to research, published in Circulation, the journal of the American Heart Association, sleep-deprived teenagers are at greater risk of high blood pressure and heart attacks. It claims that their mobiles and MP3 players could be to blame.
A study of teens aged 13 to 16 found those who slept less than 6.5 hours a night were up to three times more likely to have elevated blood pressure.
Susan Redline from University Hospital's Sleep Disorders Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio, said "sleep insufficiency" was often related to mobile phones, music and computers in the bedroom.
Apparently kids of today actually listen to music all night.
Redline said that if your teen is not getting nine hours of sleep, their noses will not be wet and their coats will lose their shine.
High blood pressure in childhood is linked to heart disease in adulthood.
We guess the recommendation means unplugging your teen from all electrical gear before they go to bed. µ

just 6.5 hours
I can live fine on 7 hours, thank the college profs for that... 6 for only so long ... and 5 not so well...(mid terms and finals)but yes sleep is essential...but when you have to stay awake....music helps...so i can see how some might get in the habit of staying up late when they don't have to... however don't get between me and my pillow when I am done with that term paper.

which is all very nice but sadly the evidence isn't there to support the logic.

as you can see the real world data about sleep and death rates show a complete different answer. 6.5 is optimal. there a fault with the daisy chain logic either one of the links is false or more likely is that the world inst so simple and there are many other important parameters which cant be sum up in a sentence.
Not fatal enough
If those iPods are killing teens, they're not doing it fast enough for my tastes.Maybe it's people with high blood pressure who have more energy, so sleep less?
Doctor's really don't know much when it comes to which comes first with respect to body processes, causes and effects. But they are trying.Hence the vitamin death scandal, where taking vitamin supplements actually increases your risk of getting some cancers by up to 40%. Based on a recently published 10 year study, published in the past 12 months in New Scientist.
Vitamin C, beta carotene etc, it was found that having the natural form such as a carrot gave you the anti-cancer benefit, but taking the chemically manufactured supplement could increase your chances of getting cancer by 40%.
They got it wrong with the manufactured derivatives, majorly wrong. There should be a global health warning because of this 40% increased risk of cancer, but then that would annoy....argghh they got me. ;-)
