Captain Dirk speaks out

On Atom and asset light

NEWLY ENSCONCED Cap'n Dirk made some of his first utterances as AMD's CEO in a conference call yesterday.

Asked about whether AMD might respond to Intel's Atomic push, Meyer said that since AMD is, "a much smaller company with not nearly the scale that our competitor has." It doesn't intend, "to try to do absolutely everything they do in the marketplace."

Slightly smaller notebooks and inexpensive notebooks are a, " market segment that we're interested in," he said.

"We actually haven't talked in public about that, but I expect we'll be talking about that roadmap when we get together in November at our analyst conference," he said, claiming the firm was already hawking some chips for Netbooks already.

The call also touched on the "asset light" strategy dreamed up by predecessor Hector Ruiz before he shuffled off upstairs.

Chief bean counter Bob Rivet said the strategy would be, "a major reformation of the company," but specific details are also pretty "light".

Captian Dirk: He's an enterprising fellow

Meyer insisted the firm is "well on track" with its 45-nanometer plan. "We actually started production late last quarter and on track to begin volume shipment early in Q4," he said.

Following Intel to a 45nm process and handing over more production to external chip foundries were important steps to bringing AMD to a position of actually making a profit.

"Since we're so far away from profitability," Rivet confessed, "the first order of magnitude is operating profit at the operating income level, not at the net income level. First get to that level then we'll work to get the net," he said. He added that he reckoned AMD would show a profit in the second half of the year, a statement that sounds vaguely familar. µ

Captain Ahab

I don't get all this cheerleading about Dirk. He may have been a competent engineer at DEC and early on at AMD, but I've seen him order the engineers in one direction and when, it proved to be the wrong one, he wiggled his finger at them from the stage for going in that direction. He may have thought that he was looking good before the board, but not before the people who actually do the work. There's virtually no engineer left at AMD who would step aboard Dirk's ship headed for stormy waters.

Hmmm, disappointing to hear

Babbo, I think all the cheerleading is mainly directed toward Hector not being the leader anymore. Kind of like those bumper stickers that say "Someone else for President".

If what you say is true, I'm a little disappointed that they can't get a good leader in place. When a company is in trouble, the last thing they need is a guy who's more concerned about his self image than the performance of the company. Accountability is key. Step up AMD, why not familiarize yourselves with the book "Good to Great"?

Or perhaps they are not ready for that level of literature yet, hold out for someone to write "Terrible to Good" first.

aaarrgggghhhh matey

So you've seen the cap'n in action or worked with the Dirkster before in the days of yor, so tell me more as I liked to know how this Cap'n weathers the storm that comes ashore. Does he raise the sail and head into the storm while rallying his mates at his side like a vampire that feeds on the frenzy of men in their greatest hour to steal their power. Aye mateys he wont won't tuck his sail turn and run from the fun that awaits him. Through the darkness he and his crew slog through the rollers on the Monster that had carried them this far. The eye of the storm offering only a momentary solace to the downtrodden, yet the crew pushes on as if the Devil himself was chasing them for their souls. For now from the stern a fresh gale rallies the sails and the Jolly Roger flies again carrying the marauders to rape, pillage and plunder their days away. Leaving a swath of destruction only to undertake greater adversaries as the day carries on.

Q#1: How AMD succeeded to loose?

My grandgrandma writes me after analysing the binary code that just two tiny speedy multimedia extension where AMD lost to Intel more than 2:1 made AMD to loose the whole game and suggested for Hector to cut the balls of their engineers (Ah, shutup, grandma, do you think engineers were soooo stupid or Kirk was all the way drunk? )

Really, how they succeeded not to satisfy gamers while beating the hell out of Intel in SPEC scores with such unbelievable margin?

Victory Column Is Mine.

Drak steps to Mic, Three Fingers on each Fist Rasied While Millions, NAY Billions of Martian Saucers Avoid C/W Songs, Heres Report:(ati)

RV870 will have 960SP. In order to control the core area, it is still 256bit. We believe RV870 will be 1.2 times than RV770 in performances

Don't Look Down, Fibbler has found second performance enhancement. its: DUAL CORE GPU archetecture. Still Maybe, it will bring Rv800 series up Double in Score from Rv700 series.
RV870 might be Rv880, both identifiers used interchangeably.

Just like American football

The backup quarterback is always the most popular... until he gets in the game and then he no longer is the backup QB and starts to get booed.

"but I expect we'll be talking about that roadmap when we get together in November at our analyst conference"

He expects it? Good to see just 1 day into his new role he has gotten the parsing of words down! Cannot he not just say "we will" talk about it, he is kinda running the show now?

I'm confused, hasn't Hector 'lightened' AMD's assets enough already? I thought that was Asset light? Hmmm... go figure...

Dirk to Enterprise..come in, Enterprise!

I really like the photo. Here's hoping Dirk can do the stuff when the 'chips' are down.

To 'Leadership_Ultie' - Man, that made me laugh!
'Drashek for president!' - 'Drashek be my mother!' - 'Drashek, we love you!'

To 'Slava' - Either a very good attempt to slip in a Drashek on us OR it really is the dreaded moron himself.

To whoever wrote that utter crap; please go forth and multiply.....

The original picture was of the alternate universe Kirk

Why'd you pick a picture where he was wearing the evil alternate universe uniform? Are you trying to suggest he's a wolf in sheep's clothing?

I'm pretty sure that's the alternate universe uniform. Or, maybe it's from that show where a transporter accident split him into two people, which would mean the original picture was of the super-kind, no balls at all(figuratively speaking) Kirk.

Which is it? And was it intentional?

The Borg...

"resistance is futile"...you will be assimilated by the Borg Capitan Dirk Diggler as the loss has now been doubled over last year's quarter and a closer look at your Entreprise Roadmap doesn't really offer a defense...

Get in your escape pods while you can :)
