Diamond XOC 4870 spotted

Summer GPU war round two starts now

BY NOW WORD has pretty much spread far and wide about the performance of the new ATI 48xx cards, prompting much consternation and hand wringing at the green team. The thing most people don't realise is that this is just the first salvo.

Nvidia took about $150-200M in a one-time charge last week, but the thing that most people didn't realize is that the drop in quarterly revenue of $150-225M was exclusive of this. Now why would Nvidia take such a hit for a competitor that was only sold for a month of the quarter? (Note: NV's quarters are off one month from the calendar.)

Because they are getting destroyed in the market. When the European sales numbers come out in a month or two, you will see the depths of the trouble they are in. NV is faced with having to eat margins or lose massive marketshare, likely both.

If the low-end cards are doing this to them, imagine what the high-end cards are going to do? Ugly doesn't begin to describe it, but the first one out of the gate, the Diamond HD 4870 XOC board is kind of pretty don't you think?

Diamond XOC overclocked 4870

This is just the first from Diamond, a little bird told us there are tons more to come from them and many others. We know about the R700/Dual 4870 board, we know there are higher-clocked variants, and we know there are higher memory SKUs as well. There are also higher-clocked dual boards with huge memory configs coming as well.

The first round of boards out of the gate, both 4850s and 4870s, were reference designs, every OEM had the same thing more or less. Very soon you will see custom designs, differentiation and much higher-end parts. The Diamond XOC card is the first one to leak out to our inbox.

At this point, it is game over for Nvidia, they will lose the high end comprehensively, lose at every price/performance point, likely every price point as well.

Can you say power shift? We told you it is going to be in interesting summer for GPUs, and you have only seen round one. µ

Enough

Enough of Nvidia hate-mongering Charlie. Criticism is one thing, but now the tone of your articles is clearly disturbing, clouding your objectivity entirely.

the war is over

It appears the summer GPU war is over. Or at least, it will be shortly when the X2 is announced.

Look at the facts

ATI primarily makes midrange cards. They know what market works for them and what most consumers are looking for - performance for a decent price.

I seriously doubt that ATI plans to unveil a GTX 280 "killer" anytime soon as they have released a fine card that performs as well as the GTX 260 (Nvidia's current second best card) for much less money.

Nvidia is already in some trouble and DAAMIT knows it. Why should ATI speed up their roadmap now?

nVidia stole Charlies toy?

"Ugly doesn't begin to describe it, but the first one out of the gate, the Diamond HD 4870 XOC board is kind of pretty don't you think?"

Get over it already, Charlie. You need professional help with that anti-nVidia complex. Did they steal your firetruck toy as a kid? ATI cards pretty? Its a PC component with a graphic on it. You need to get out more. Perhaps I can recommend an anti-nVidia demontration for you? :)

Go Charlie Go!

Now, can you help AMD fix up their CPU line as well ;-)

AMD/ATI?

Who are ATI? AMD is going out of business, why are people still printing news articles about them, no one cares about them or their graphics cards, they're not worthy of discussion.

Now off we go back to CoD4 on our GTX 280's.

Charlie was RIGHT

Again and again every day in these weeks we realize Charlie was right with all that 'NVIDIA-are-the-bad-guys' news.

NVIDIAs big muscles are pwned by ATIs decent sword, and as NVIDIA bleeds, the RED fresh blood is just everywhere.

DIE YOU F*CKING NVIDIA.

DAAMIT needs a 9600GT killer for $99. This will make another home run.

gtx280?

why are there delusional people who think that "ATI doesn't have a competitor for GTX280"? Really? seriously folks.

Have you looked at the reviews? Good lord the 4870 is already right there with it in a ton of benchmarks. Their competitor is out there right now. The sad part is AMD calls this a mid range part $300 and it is able to go head to head with a $650 part. When the X2 comes it's going to be just nasty.
Here's a random sample taken from the net for you:
http://www.overclockersclub.com/reviews/powercolor_hd4870/7.htm

Who in their right mind would be idiotic enough to go out and buy a gtx280 over a 4870 right now? fanboy much?

What about the GPU at 80'C-90'C, is that fixed yet?

What about the GPU at 80'C-90'C, is that fixed yet? I saw it mentioned that changing from the stock DAAMIT cooler to an aftermarket cooler made the thing run 30'C cooler.

Is it ok for the pcb/gpu/everthing else on the card if the gpu is running so hot? Will we all need to buy and fit gpu-coolers?

You are not telling the truth

I am very happy that AMD has the graphics card market back on their terms now that Nvidia has been ruling for about 2 years, but lets not get too jumpy about it Charlie. I just saw a Nvidia GTX260 for only $230 on newegg which is about equal with the 4870 in terms of performance if not better. It has 50% more GDDR 896MB. At any price point less than $200 (the sweet spot right now) the 8800GT and 9600GT have it all locked up beating any card out there and doing it for the same price or less. $140 for an 8800GT on newegg. Next is around $200-$250 where nvidia has a solid contender in its 9800GTX from LAST generation. And do not forget Nvidia has the fastest single GPU card on the market with the GTX280. Pricey I know, but its the performance king right now.

..YayTI finally get elf-pants!!

Charlie, you have helped ATI win the 'elf-pants' award - given to those who play the most WOW and believe it's real!! Are we talking performance, bottom-line, technology..? YAY, ATI win the little chip battle? YAY#2, ATI make best priced 'midrange' card available? YAY#3, ATI have support of CHArlie!!! Send me those yet-to-be-announced, .4880xtzo2 card, quickly!!! It's tiny, 4 cores, with 2 transistors(megawarpdrive-parallel processorz)s, TPD of .000003w, Crysis @ .005x.00325, woot!!!

Charlie you're frothing at the mouth now :-(

Comeon man, I've always liked your writeups, and while there may be truth in what you write about nVidia, you're seriusly starting to lose your credibility by writing articles that don't look objective even one itsy bit. Really sad. Hope to see you continue on the good stuff, but without the nVidia hate.

Another nail...

We might as well add here that Nvidia has refused to release the source code of their drivers, even after requests to do so by Linux kernel developers (yet AMD and Intel have complied). So this is more market that Nvidia has turned their back on. Netbooks, laptops, and other PC's shipping with Linux will be using AMD or Intel chips, as will a lot of people buying PC's or graphics cards and loading Linux themselves. Oh well, hang on to your *trade secrets*, Nvidia!

Not so fast

Charlie, Charlie... In the quarter ended Mar 29, 2008 AMD's graphics division posted $11M loss (excluding the aquisition charges). Why? Because AMD flooded the market with cheap 38xx cards that were not making them any money. AMD is doing much of the same thing with the 48xx cards now, and with CPUs for that matter. Are they making things harder for Nvidia? Sure. Are they helping themselves? Not so much. For example, people who were buying Radeon GF8800 and 9800 in droves over the past 6 months really have no reason to throw $200 into a marginal upgrade to 4850.

GTX 260 is $299!

I would LOVE to see Nvidia selling the GTX 260 for $230 or even $199 and see them sell themselves out of business! :p Those been following the development of the GTX 200 series should know Nvidia is already being squeezed to meeting the $299 mark (the lowest price I found at newegg.com: MSI N260GTX-T2D896) due to die size and yield issues. The GTX 260 has more video memory but isn't all that much better than the Radeon HD 4850 at high res. At least so far the 4850 has not displayed any issues with having 'only' 512mb in any benchmarks yet.

The 8800 GT 512mb can be had for $140 or less and likewise the 9800 GTX can be had for $200 to $250 or less on newegg.com .

Is not that hard to check prices online nowadays. :p

The 8800 GTX / 9800 GTX were $300+ cards until recently and I personally would not upgrade to a 4850 from those. At least at current prices. However anything slower, I would have to disagree with 'marginal upgrade to 4850'.

Been reading the 4850 and 4870 has plenty of room to wage a price war so lets bring it on! :) Only consumers will win in the end. :)

right now on the money

I've owned nVidia forever...
The only ATI Radeon card that I had in the last 7 years was the 9700pro until recently, I tried a 3870 and was very surprised with the quality of the Catalyst drivers and software.

nVidia is up against some very stuff competition now.

For me, it'll be ATI moving forward due to Hydravision support. nVidia dropped nView support. While it can be hacked into the XP drivers, it's non-existent in Vista.

Nvidia fanboys

I love seeing all the Nvidia fanboys throwing their little fit. Apparently they can't take the heat that they dish out themselves.

At least ATI doesn't try to milk its customers for every last dime like Nvidia does. Plus you get the latest technology with ATI cards, unlike Nvidia who intentionally holds back in an attempt to milk their customers for every last dime.

?!?! Single G280 for me

Not quite sure what you're drinking, but after that tweaktown review it seemed that buying two for xfire is not the best option. Too many times, single 4870 was outpeforming dual 4870's. G280 performance delta was very low on the tests it did not win. Couple that with the increased power and slot consumption as well as the increased heat dissipation, and I take single G280 over dual 4870's ftw

This is FUNNY !

I'm thrilled to see the Nvidia fanboys going out of their minds. :- o)
I will go with either AMD/ATI or Intel/Nvidia, or any combination, I could care less, but it's GREAT to see the true believer nv personal fame proclaimers hitting the ceiling and crashing through cut to pieces on this one.
I don't appreciate biased reviewers either, (anand la shimpi virtually hated AMD for sooooooo long, always dissing in overproportion) but what's so great about this is the reviewer isn't and doesn't have to be biased, it's all true ! LOL
I've been watching and reading how Nvidia dictates prices like Nazi Stormtroopers and threatens death of supply if you don't KTA, they are all about their ding dang stock, some $GREEN$ $100.00 bill counting vultures at the top spew out their raping prices and no doubt they have a hundred marketing guru's calculating their demonic dollar deluge...
I just about got the 9800GTX last week or so, but saw how the $300+ monster was going to be slashed a full $100 bucks, sure enough, ATI 4000 series hit and SLAM down the tubes went 9800GTX, just like the NvAZIS ordered. :-0)
Well, there's more to come. This has been a HUGE lesson for me in competition and the "not so free" market.
My gawd I almost wasted $200 smackers on a 8600gt xxx less than 6 months ago...
I feel sorry for the ENDLESS supply of suckas out there, who don't have time to check reviews and release dates and no doubt get @$$ hammered when they buy some 3-4 generatuion itterations ago card.
Walmart has $200 PCI 6200 videocards out now with 256 ram. LOL OMG bend over! Yes that was and is PCI - not pci-e, not near dead agp8x, but BEFORE that. Of course the NvAZIS sent them there...
Oh.... it costs us sooooooo much for a silicon core.. blah blah blah blah.
BEND OVER nv nazis, bend the f over!!!!! It's your turn and we're all going to LOVE IT.
Coming: 9800GTX+ , all these ddr5 4870's memepump and x2 styles and who knows what else! Yeehaawwwww!
I'm hanging on for a few more weeks, for that next $50 or $100 dollar drop so I can LAUGH at them and not kick myself.
All honor and praise to the hardware reviewers and sneak peek previewers !!!! You are the anti-man MEN!
( and yes screw you crybaby nv fanboiz, you weasel headed loserz! Not that there's anything wrong with that.... lol keep screaming it makes this so much fun and cheaper! )
