Firefox clocks up eight million downloads
Record breaking browser
OPEN SAUCE Web browser Firefox was downloaded more than eight million times in its first 24 hours.
According to a big cheese in the Mozzarella Foundation, at its peak, Firefox's Web site was serving up 17,000 copies a minute.
More than 200 countries were downloading mostly in the United States, Germany, Japan, Spain and Britain.
The Foundation wanted to set a world record for most software downloads in a 24-hour period. The Guinness World Records organisation has yet to approve the record.
The high numbers of downloads were all the more surprising as for the first hour the number of visitors checking for the update overloaded Firefox's Web servers causing them to crash. µ

well i tried foxylady 3 and phantom of the opera 9.5 both of which are heading the same way as internet exploder, features for features sake, aka bloatware !!!!! both i promptly uninstalled and reverted to the last STABLE versions, WTF, pooter golden rule numero uno "IF IT AINT BROKE DONT FIX IT !!!!" and INQ seein how im an opera *cough 'fanboy' when you getting this site to work with opera ??? im having to use M$ internet exploder to post this comment, eeeeeeeeeeeeeeek O_OWhats the Big Deal!?
What's all this hoobla & whoop di do about FireFox setting download records??Look at the BBC link -
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/7462900.stm
It goes people held parties to mark download day.
Oh come on gimme a break!!
The fact that there is already a vulnerability found within 24-hours speaks for itself!
One more thing to all the FanBoy's rambling it only affects 3.0 & the browser is new so it's acceptable..No Sir/Madam it's not...coz the same vulnerability exists in 2.xx versions!
Go search in detail on it if you don't believe me.
Side notes -
I gave 3.0 a go....nothing great honestly...just the look feels different...it loads up a bit faster & uses some less memory but nothing that drastic.
Coming to the look of things...they have added "Top 10 Visited Sites" Rip-Off from Opera! Opera was doing this like since ages!
My gripe with the feel of FF you can't open a new tab if you middle click next to the tab...& where is the open new tab button? It's missing you have to add it manually thru View options...Retarded!
Not having that feature is such a downer even IE 7.0 has it!
Security maybe beefed up a bit but if you're dumb enough to fall for phishing scams I don't think any type of security can help you honestly.
In short yeah 3.0 is good compared to 2.xx...but still nowhere close to IE or Opera IMO.
Coming to Opera...that thing has it's own share of faults...not supporting Active X by default & 9.5 is such a big disappointment also! A number of bugs...& the look of 9.5 is such crap....I don't use any skins so just turn off the skin it's all black & white...just plain dumb on opera's part.
Anyway I'm back on Opera 9.27 I'll wait till maybe Opera 10 to upgrade.
So currently I use Opera 90% time...IE 9% & FF 1%.
Next!
I'm looking forward to breaking the download record when the first revision is out.Besides the cosmetic changes, the new URL bar history is down right annoying. Just give me auto-completion solely from the URL!
Yes, it's noticeably faster rendering and running scripts, but it comes at the cost of some sites not rendering correctly, sometimes down to just a blank page!
I'd say to the non-geek web surfer to skip it. Nothing to see here.
This is a little Surprising
I download firefox off the mozilla website and congrats for the 8 million downloads, but downloads.com had 14 million downloads in less then 24 hrs when I checked. Mozilla got beat out on their day by a software download site.Piffle
Are the opera users trying to become the new apple fanbois? And do you actually think all the raving like a lunatic encourages people to try opera? What's the thought there? Onlookers will say 'Oh I want to belong to a group of lunatics too!! let me drop my suicide belt and get into opera instead!!' (excuse the terrorism joke, it's meant to amuse non-fanboys and only compares a level of nuttiness, not to link it to maliciousness)

When your world is defined by the what others do and not what you do yourself to give your life meaning, you're doomed to always be the crowd following the Judas goat.
Update
Try 12,000,000+Could have been more downloads...
I have the latest FireFox 2.0.0.14. It never offered to upgrade me to 3.0, not even now when I selected Check for Updates. Lots more would have downloaded it if the browser had offered version 3.0 just like it does for incremental updates. As it was, I only found out about it online and so I knew to download it.say wha?
@ W :-Wow you don't even understand my post & label me a Opera fanboy..Classic! Wonder who the real fanboy is.
I said it I do indeed use FF 3.0 BUT to make it function the way I want I have to use a couple of Add-Ons...which is time consuming to search for in the first place.
With Opera 9.27 I use 0 add-ons or anything everything is there with the browser & it seems fine to me.
I will give you an example -
Say I want to add a search engine in the "Search Feild"...in FF I have to go to their website & from there I can search for sites...& most of the site searches which I want are not listed.
With Opera I just "right click on the search box in the website & click on create search" that's it the search engine gets added...Tell me how cool & nifty is that?
Anyway I'm not forcing you to use Opera nor am I running an "Internet Follow Opera cult" everyone has their own choices.
@psychochief -
I dunno what's up with your install maybe you need to re-install it back up your settings...with "OperaFly" search for it & download it....As far as I know this OperaFly only works uptop v9.27 not with the 9.5 version.
I'm posting this comment from v9.27 without using any "masking feature for the webpage my browser is identified as Opera for this website" it works great no problems whatsoever anytime.
One more thing the reason I feel Opera launced 9.5 was just coz FF was launching 3.0 which is a big mistake on their part...You said it correct instead of adding a new look to v9.5 they should've just improved the rendering engine.
Thew "Windows Native" skin of v9.5 is such a piece of crap...black & white wtf...It hurts my eyes!
I don't like running any skins hey it's a browser after-all...not a wallpaper...if I wanna show off something to anyone I'd rather put on Windows DreamScene than show them how my browser looks!

You gigantic retard. I am posting this comment using Opera 9.50.Comeback...
@ JayHave you tried double LMB clicking in the tab bar to open a new tab? Or even Ctrl + T. Or MMB click on a link.
Any one of these might have been more useful than randomly clicking commands designed for a completely different product.
Shocka! You complain about minor quibbles because you are a fan-boy. See below.
@ Opera fan-boys
It is an Internet Browser not the Second Coming of Christ. Get a sense of perspective and drop dead. Please.
@ Everyone
Tried Opera - Messy, fussy, tries too much.
Tried IE7 - Drives me to hair-pulling, and I don't suffer from Trichotillomania.
Tried Firefox - It works how I want a browser to work, and has as many or as few features as I want.
But I'm not wed to it and I'm willing to move on when a better option comes along. That's the difference between me and a fan-boy.
using ff3 on linux
BIG improvement. way lower memory than the rc and beta, and way more stability, even than the rc. much lower memory than version 2.What's all the fuss about?
I just don't get it....Maxthon browser has way more functionality that either IE or Firefox or Opera already built into it.I tried Firefox 3 and found most if not all that Maxthon has as standard has to be downloaded as an add-in eg capturing webpages/one-click opening from the browser of any other programmes you have on your machine/split screens etc. etc.
Go Maxthon!
