Windows 7 confirmed for 2010

Screenshots appear

MICROSOFT has confirmed that Windows 7 will be with us " sometime in 2010" and appears to have released screenshots into the blogsphere.

A spokesvole said the release date of the successor to Windows Vista will ultimately be decided by, "meeting the quality bar". It is not the first time Microsoft has decided something in a good pub.

Client versions of Windows 7 will ship in both 32-bit and 64-bit flavours. A server version with the original title of Windows Server 7, is also being looked at.

The Vole is keeping deadly quiet about Windows 7 in case more punters decide that is probably worth waiting three years rather than buying the disappointing and lacklustre Vista. It also seems unlikely to want to promise the world and then have the embarrassment of having to pull all the functionality because it cannot get it to work.

However, screens of some of the early versions are starting to leak onto the Internet. They do not tell us much, other than it looks like Microsoft really has started to copy Apple's desktop. µ

Who is copying whom?

Strange to read this kind of news here. Firstly, I would recommend you to check if the source is trusted. All the screenshots except winver are fakes, it is so obviously. And where is the link for official anouncement for ETA Windows 7? And I should say that Windows M1 doesn't look like Apple MacOS (you would agree, if you would have seen screenshots)

Concept Work

They're not real screenshots: http://dotnetwizard.net/?p=981

Most of the images have the author's handles on them (AlckO and xazac) - Googling leads to their profiles on deviantArt.

Version 7?

It sure does look pretty but the following screenshot marks it as Windows 6.1 not 7

V Is For The Old Windows Me

So Vista was nothing more then another
Windows Me,..

I remember users would swore up and down (right and left too) and tell me that windows Me was the bomb!

Interesting how the cycle return back to
be crown titled ---- "Vista Me OS" ----

Windows Letdown

Wow, am I the only one who is left unimpressed by those screenshots? What is all that useless crap taking up space on the desktop for? If this is the best Microsoft can do, then thats pretty sad. I was expecting something innovative in look and feel. Even with the "circular" menus it looks boring, cluttered, and unimaginative. Microsoft actually pays people to make this? I think I'll stick with Ubuntu.

Ummmm why ?

It was kind of dissapointing that Vista had a 32-bit version.. and they are going to have a 32-bit version with the next windows.. thats just retarded.

Why not go 64-bit all the way.. in 2 years time 4 Gb RAM is bound to become the standard anyway.

So who cares?

Vista made me realise that what I've got is good enough. I'm using XP SP3.

So, why upgrade? Vista obviously is a write-off - the only thing saving it was DX10 as I'm an avid gamer, but that also turned out to be an over-hyped dud - so that finished Vista.

What can WIndows 7 offer? Firstly, ignore everything MSoft says, it WILL be even slower than Vista and require even more resources -- every OS they ever released always did.

But we've already got 3d graphics, networking, voice recognition, the internet --- what's left? Ever higher display resolutions? Ever higher fidelity sound? In exchange for needing a new PC? What a joke. (This upgrade cycle has helped drive people onto consoles as everyone knows.)

Yet if I stay with XP, the experience only gets BETTER each time I upgrade my pc. With my new core2duo setup with 4 gigs of ram and a 250 GB sata drive, CPU useage while running emule and BTorrent simultaneously is around 0% --- now I can leave them on permanently without worrying about turning them off for demanding games.

XP may be my final OS. Oh, and on my old PC I'll be mucking around with Linux.

A big f**** you to MSoft for ripping me off on the original windows ME (Yes, I bought one) and for cunningly abrogating my rights to install my old XP on a new PC, all in the name of preventing piracy (In otherwords, preventing a possible threat to their rights is more important than my actual rights).

And another thing..;.

Does anyone else think Ballmer has to go?

It seemed under Bill that MS made some mistakes but their general strategies were sound and the company prospered. But Bill was a geek. A good businessman too, but as a geek he understood the market and his company.

Ballmer was a good number two but he's a bad number one. It's hard to see something like this because he's good tactically which to some extent mitigates the errors and makes it harder to see the larger strategic mistakes he's making.

But the long term trend for MS under Ballmer is downwards. In the end he's just a suit -- and if there's one industry where it's imperative to actually understand your products at a gut level, it's the tech industry. And Ballmer has shown again and again that he just doesn't get it.

I wonder if the CIA or NSA have hand in the developement of this OS like they did with Vista.

More horrible reporting from a horrible reporter. Incredible, how the quality of this site dips to levels of links to two-bit blogs with clearly faked "screenshots".

Embarassing.

Shorely A Vole In The Hole

"Wiener" means "Viennese" in German and this next "Windows 7" is codenamed: Vienna. Vienny Weenies are not unheard of in bars or quality pubs in the UK, where one may find "Bangers and Mash." This new operating system is sure to cost the Bucks, especially taken from the VAT. Punters should not drive a Lorne. Although we don't know hough the Vole will dish Windows 7 out, we can be sure that SPAM will be an ingredient. Additionally, expect the canned potted sauce-OS' to be chock full of peckers, lips, (brains?) and sheep tongues au jus. Great Saveloy Red Hot's Pudding Puffs! The batterings out of the pot and in to the frying pan. Where's the "Starters" button, pass the menu, and buy us a Bitter! I expect the Vole to save this until the end of the world in 2012, when Stevole' can dance out the last waltz at the opera ball with multiple heterogeneous minwins that live in the wibble. What a sight for sore eyes, dressed in skin tight sausage casings. What an intestine barker. What wine goes with Black Pudding? Queuing for Beginners Off Licence? Perhaps not.

What to think

"it looks like Microsoft really has started to copy Apple's desktop"
Oh dear, it was my impression that vista was an attempt at catering to the apple type of crowd, you know; the people who don't want to know about computers but want to use one anyway, and I was hoping they learned that it's not their forte, but maybe they didn't learn?

I can't believe...

how much memory/cpu cycles/HD space Windows 7 takes to run! Windows 98 ran on a 50kB kernel and Ubuntu runs on 20kB. In fact I could run ALL my software in Dos6.3 with less than 512kB!
I am sick and tired of M$ and their bloatware!

...idiots
posted by : JP, 26 May 2008

Oh great, another 32 bit OS

Nice to see they're really trying to innovate this time and lose the bloat by hanging on to 32 bit. I'll sure they'll pack in a bunch of useless drivers too just to bloat it all up and make it run even worse than Vista. I'm really looking forward to 2010 (or 2012 in MS time)

I guess they are sticking with the 7 billion SKU's instead of a simple Home and Pro. Wot a fok farce!

Screenshots?

It's a funny thing, but screenshots, whether they're real or not, tell you nothing about an O/S - all they do is show you the UI.

But I guess that for 99% of windows users the UI _is_ the O/S.

Wait ...

I thought one of the reasons Vista got delayed was because after spending as much on R&D to put a man on the moon (and boasting about spending 5 billion dollars annually on R&D), they delayed just a few more weeks to iron out remaining quality concerns. Funny how things work out, as I type this from my MacBook ...

Windows 7 Confirmed

A good source of "news" and screenshots of 7 is Thurrott's Windows Supersite which has been running build 6915 for sometime.
You'll see there that 2010 is hardly a revelation, though how the Inquirer makes 2010 equal "3 years" rather than than 1 1/2 is somewhat. (estimated MS delay-factor?).

As far as copying apple, for me the gui is still more reminiscent of ...er, windows.

Shut up fools

You people are idiots! If you don't like Windows or Microsoft, then quit using it and shut up about it. I like technological progress. Not like the dope who wants to use DOS to run all his apps. Grow up people and get off the internet before you learn something new. Retards!

Hilarious!

I Love it when the 'journalists' at the Inq get duped. They go on and on about how crappy another MS product is ... with no idea that they haven't even seen the real thing. Then all the MS Hater - anti-fanboi's jump in without a second thought, exposing their brainwashed ignorance.

The first screenshots of Windows 7 Alpha have been out for awhile ... they aren't these fakes that an artist created hoping MS would possibly consider them.

The Alpha shots ... look no different from Vista

Misleading

It's misleading to suggest that these are "leaked" screenshots, they're only mockups and Windows Vista shell styles, skins, widgets, etc.

If M$ is still in bidness

With any luck, they will have packed it in by then. :-)

Microsoft copying Apple? Funny that anyone noticed that going on--it's as easy to miss as, say, being hit upside the head with a brick.

lol meets the quality bar. Vista should have been released in the 80's
posted by : Mike Hunt, 27 May 2008

lol....i love haters

You know the funny thing is that this early in the build, it is nothing more than UI building. it all still runs on Vista. These are conceptual gui mockups for possible use. For anyone to think that M$ can go from working on Vista SP1 and XP SP3 to being able to build a prototype OS is farking nuts. for all of you fanboi's, "we get it" you hate M$, Apple, Sony, um insert reason to live here, etc. No one cares anymore.

Personally i like being able to look forward to a nicer UI. I dont understand the mentality of working in DOS. Last time i checked back to the future isn't in the theatres and twisted sister wasnt on MTV. It's time to let it go. With the capability of even stock intel graphics at our finger tips why do we need to stay in the 80's/90's? Aesthetics are what draw customers in, and if M$ is trying to catch up to Apple's design metality i say good for them.

In the end, if you dont like it dont buy it...and shut the hell up already.

You're kidding yourself

if you think that you own windows "to boldly step into the forefront of cutting edge technology" or "because you like to know how your computer works as opposed to just using one". No offense fanboys, but 2 OS's already fill those niches.. use linux if you TRULY want to know what makes your computer tick and desire complete controll. And use OSX if you simply want something that works. If you want a disgusting hybrid jack of all trades master of none abomination of a bloatware wooooohooooo Winblows. MS is heading into one of those shitty dry spells that spanned Windows ME/2000 era. And yeah those screenies are either mostly fake or old. Nice job Inq.

Vista user

I have 8 gigs of ram and usually have SQL, Access, Excel, multiple explorers with multiple tabs, steam, media player, trading desk, dual monitor, and whatever else needed all running on 64-bit Vista- all open at once. 4.9 gigs are being utilized according to task manager, no crashes, excellent response time. I do not think I would be this happy on XP.

Try 64 bit, try 8 gigs you will be happy.
