Verizon backs up Limo
Linux the android killer
VERIZON Wireless says that it will back the Linux-based free operating system, Limo, as the preferred software on its network.
This is a kick in the teeth for Qualcomm which has been selling most of Verizon's software.
The operating system has the backing of large Asian and European carriers, as well as handset makers like Motorola, Samsung and LG. However the US has been a bit slower to enthuse about it.
Kyle Malady, vice president of network for Verizon, wants to see the OS used to sell simple and smart phones.
The main trick is to encourage developers to come up with applications that can be installed on the operating system. Malady said that with so many big names behind the operating system developers are more likely to check out Limo and Linux Mobile first.
The first version of its software package was released in March, and Motorola, Samsung, LG and Panasonic have shown off phones using it. µ
