IBM launches Cell blades for HPC

Running Red Hat Linux

BIG BLUE launched a new line of Cell processor blade servers on Tuesday, targeting high-perfomance computing domains.

IBM's new Bladecenter QS22 server blades each mount a pair of 3.2Ghz Powerxcell 8i microprocessors and up to 32GB of RAM. The systems are intended for use in financial services, digitial content creation and medical imaging applications.

The Powerxcell 8i chips are the latest of the Cell microprocessor architecture that was developed jointly by IBM, Sony and Toshiba, and which has provided CPUs for a wide variety of computing devices as disparate as gaming consoles, laptop PCs and high-density data center servers.

The Bladecenter QS22 systems will run Red Hat Enterprise Linux and include IBM's open sauce Eclipse development environment. IBM claims its new QS22 systems can be integrated with x86 based servers in customers' data centers.

A 42U rack will hold up 56 QS22 blade servers capable of delivering up to 25.8 teraflops of computing torque.

IBM plans to start shipping QS22 Bladecenter units in early June. µ
