Craigslist countersues Ebay

A whole raft of accusations

ONLINE CLASSIFIED adverts network Craigslist countersued Ebay Tuesday, alleging that the Internet auction megasite has engaged in unfair competition.

Ebay both holds a minority stake in Craigslist, having bought a 28 per cent interest in 2004, and started up a competing online classifieds service, named Kijiji, in the US last year.

Ebay had sued Craigslist back in April, claiming that founder Craig Newmark and CEO Jim Buckmaster entered into 'clandestine transactions' that unfairly diluted Ebay's holding.

Filed in Superior Court in San Francisco, California, Craigslist's countersuit alleges that Ebay calls Kijiji 'the Craigslist killer' and appointed a Kijiji insider to Craigslist's board of directors.

Craigslist claims Ebay's appointed board member then obtained confidential Craigslist information to benefit Kijiji, acts that Craigslist's complaint alleged violate California unfair competition laws.

The complaint also claims that Ebay committed trademark infringement and dilution, business interference, false advertising, and phishing attacks as well as breached its fiduciary duty to shareholders.

Craigslist claims that Ebay infringed upon and diluted Craiglist's trademark by placing misleading adverts for Kijiji on Google using Craigslist's name.

Craigslist wants Ebay to return its shareholding stake and pay some damages.

The Associated Press has the story here. µ

Really?

Did a kindergardener log in to dictate the above poster's message?

Looking at usage stats and personal experience, eBay and Skype are still strong. Craigslist is handy (I got my truck from a listing there) and offers a quality service distinctly different from eBay (I've never even heard of Kijiji).

Skype offers group voice chat with amazing clarity, and until Gizmo, Google Talk, Ekiga, or Pidgin implement something similar, Skype will continue to have my business.

I've used both

I've used both ebay and Craigslist to get rid of stuff. In my view, EBay and Craigslist aren't direct competitors.

Ebay is good for small and valueable things that aren't expensive to ship.

Craigslist is good for:
-cheap stuff where the listing fee and shipping cost would be higher than the item is worth.
-stuff that's expensive to ship because it's heavy/big
-if you just want to give away something for free

If you want to get top dollar for something, list it on EBay. If you just want to get rid of something and get a bit of money, put it on Craigslist.
