GTA IV - not for everyone

Voice of Unreason Different strokes for different folks

AMIDST ALL THE hand-wringing from terribly-concerned pressure groups about the imminent launch of GTA IV, a simple question seems to have completely failed to be asked. [He gets there eventually but you have to be patient - Sub ed].

People who have probably never even played solitaire are suddenly being quoted as expert witnesses on the perils of gaming and the threat it poses to society. Our children's innocence is at stake; gratuitous sex and violence are cutting a simulated swathe through civilisation; hookers are having their limbs hacked off with chainsaws; and expensive cars are being driven at improbable speeds, scattering hapless pedestrians as they go.

Stores such as Currys are introducing new family-friendly rating systems for games in a cynical bid to encourage responsible parents to shop there rather than at its rivals' emporia.

This is, of course, excellent publicity for any company producing games that involve heavyweight weaponry and bad attitudes.

When Windows 95 appeared, it came with a free game called Hover. This involved driving a hovery thing around a castle, but without any nasty contact, aggression or bloodletting. No doubt there's a Hover society somewhere still exchanging gaming tips and tricks in a non-confrontational way.

The attraction of nasty, violent, biting-peoples'-faces-off gaming is that it takes dull, insipid people who wouldn't know which way round to hold a Heckler & Koch MP5 and who think a Mac-10 is a pastel-hued PC from California and gives them a taste of an exciting, dissolute lifestyle they will never know for real, unless they're extremely unlucky.

For a few hours each day, they become amoral, drug-crazed sociopaths for fun. They will never get to live out their harmless fantasies in the real world, where, sadly, such behaviour results in misery, disease, death, destruction and a lot of blood and gore for some poor sucker on the minimum wage to mop up afterwards.

So, back to that unasked question: people who flip burgers or work as junior accounts clerks can find an escape from their drab, ordinary lives by driving imaginary stolen cars full of drugs through shopping malls while smiting passersby with sophisticated weaponry, simply because it's completely different to their normal lives.

So what on earth do real gangsters, pimps and psychopaths do to relax after a hard day shooting people - and up - for real?

Presumably, these dudes would find escape in games where they go to school, get some qualifications, get a steady job, save up to buy a car, have 2.4 kids and die of boredom aged 65.

Or perhaps they play Hover. µ

What's real gangsters, pimps and psychopaths to do

I was under the impression that in Blighty, they took to hugging hoodies' community services such as "Save the Hoodie" campaigns; or other such dervish as BBC Four. But then, I have a wire in the blood.

Games don't kill...

...people turn into zombies playing games. I have wasted a lifetime playing games, when I could have passed through college.

Playing games will make you unemployed and lonely, or alone with your mother.

GTA IV

If you think driving over pedestrians, stealing cars, shooting rocker propelled grenades into crowded areas & or beating up hookers that won't get into your car is wrong even in a GAME...

DON'T PLAY GTA.

But don't infringe on my right to play whatever game I want. (not you Andrew)

Let's say you are a mormon, god bless you. If that works for you, great. GTA works for me & I have a right to play it.

P.S.

No, satan didn't command me to write this, he still owes me money.

Interesting

It's an interesting point of view and your damn right these bubble wrap experts need to play and complete those games before they cast their holier than thou judgment. Personally I don’t like the GTA series – since the great GTA3 revamp it’s been the same of old crap over and over. Fourth instalment and still no f*****g coop play for a single player story! Am I wrong in thinking most real thugs work together in gang’s?

RE: Games don't kill...

This is a replayI'm 24. I started playing games at age of 5 (Boulderdash, Contra, River Raid, etc) Got my first PC at age of 9 (Wolfenstein 3D, Dooooooom, Quake, Duke Nukem 3D, Shadow Warrior, Blood, etc). I played A LOT. I finished elementary school, high school, and good 4-year business college as one of the best students. Have a decent job, and girlfriend (5 years). I still play A LOT (20 hours a week).

Yes, playing games will make you unemployed, etc ... if you're a FKN IDIOT who has a low self-esteem, no self-control, weak mind, weak will, and plainly sucks at life. Don't waste our air, kill yourself.

If you can't get away from a video game, you suck. If you can't differentiate between virtual reality and reality, you suck. If you have to repeat or mimmick games in real life, you suck.
Playing games will make you unemployed and lonely...
Yes, but games are much more fun than jobs and physical company so it's still a win-win situation. :)

Self determination

I was born free. Freedom comes with responsibilities and consequences. The responsibility to choose what’s best for ME, the consequences, good or bad, that follow MY choices. It also implies to use critical thinking to support my self determination.

There is no object or subject inherently good or bad, only what I DO about it make it good or bad. A book never killed anyone, a movie never killed anyone and no video game ever killed anyone. As a matter of fact, no gun ever killed anyone. The only thing that exist are people making the wrong choice to kill with a gun. The gun has no mind of its own. I could choose to kill with a rock. That doesn’t make rocks a bad thing. The bottom line is to educate people to learn how to do the right choices in life. That starts at home with the parent’s education and at school.

Tell me all you want about what you disapprove about anything and I will sincerely listen. On the other hand, never dictate what’s good for me. I’m free, will make that distinction for myself and I’m ready to fight and die for my freedom of choice. Mr. the legislator, am I crystal clear on that?

Now, where is my brand new copy of GTA IV?? I feel the urge to virtually blow up a couple of things right now…

It is Rated afterall

As a parent who buys games for himself and his children, I can make the defferentiation between 18+ and E ratings. Granted this is pretty much a guideline, my 14 yr old may not see GTA for maybe another 3 yrs. Assuming he has the desire.
Obviously I am over 18, I could get GTA, but I won't, I think the game's concept is stupid... but that's just me.
When will some of these morons realize that many parents actually have half a brain and can see that big rating emblazoned on the cover; some of us actually do homework on the game beforehand (look at screen shots, read reviews etc)
We don't need some 'expert' adding to the pile of crap already spewed out on the interweb

Ugh

If you were raised right and can differentiate between the real world and make believe then I say go for it. I have great parents and served my country for 14 years and that includes 3 wars and killing the bad guys. Ive been playing games like these since the days of the commodore Vic-20 and I turned out one fine upstanding citizen. Im buying a PS3 in May just for this game and 2 others (MGS4 and Bf Bad company) so yeh I agree let us play and spew your anti-game sludge elsewhere! Now back to COD4 online on my $3000 PC!

how do you know? do you grill your burger using your core2 with no heat sink? do you want to steal your CEO's car and bang his wife? do you imagine you are the prime minister of the UK? or imagine you are the queen of england, perhaps you'd love to imagine 3P with C. Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney before they play a match.

how do you know the president of the United States isn't playing GTA IV?

so much imaginations, but andrew, on the box of GTA IV said its for Mature 18+, we already know it is not for every one, we are not mentally challenge, people can read it, we don't need you to tell us who does what, who wants to escape from what, what so ever, you can gangbang with the whole manchester united 1st team, i'd like to see that happen, so you can escape from your sorry life.

i will be looking for you andrew on GTA IV, i will hunt your ass down, why? its fun, pure pressure, it's so criminal, ask your girlfriend to play GTA IV as well, so i can pay her money, then kill her off and take my money back. so i can escape the reality, and piss on your face to relax my gentle organ, and entertain readers on inquirer.

Oh what a life ruined by video games!

I'm a gamer.. it has destroyed my life... it began in my teens... i started hanging out with the wrong crowd ... going to lans

I had to get a high-paying in the criminal underworld known as 'IT' to pay for the hardware, the anime, the paintball gear, the cars and the travel. I also had to go get degrees in order to earn more
money.

Naturally my parents are disappointed I didn't have a real job and a real career... like fixing cars or ploughing fields or whatever the hell these people think is a future for their offspring.

I can't get a real girlfriend... I have to make do with a geek girlfriend who can have intellegent conversation, pay her own way and change a video card!

Look what gaming has done to me I should seek help.

In the good old days...

Yes, I've played hover. But moreover, I remember enjoying the original GTA. I found the overhead, colourful, pixelated view gave the game a more cheerful disposition, and I could enjoy driving around and trying not to crash into too many cars. Once the games got 3D and dirty, they lost all that appeal. Funny, that.

If you're a moron, games kill

Totally agree with 6T@ r|_||_32!!111. Games are not dangeorus if you have the will to stop when starting to cross the limit between safety and excess. I know that because I wasted plenty of months of my life playing. But I learned to become more controlled and moderate.

6T@ r|_||_32!!111 is whats wrong with this world.

I also am like you and play games and manage my work and play lots of games. But you are a plain horrible person to go and suggest someone should kill themselves because they are not able to have a successful career and play games like us.

Who are you to say things like he should kill him self and not waste our air? There is plenty of air for us all, you don't own it. We are not all perfect, each to their own. So do us all a favour and stfu!

On a more serious note, I thought they liked to listen to classical music while enjoying a liver with a nice chianti.

The police claim they play GTA.

Let's face, it. The gangster wannabees in the suburban world make GTA a hit, but genuine criminals play the game for fun and as a gang recruitment tool. All the jokes about criminals playing hover represent an analogy that doesn't even work as a joke.

I don't see games as destroying kid's lives, as long as those games are fantasy and SF FPS, RTS and RPG's. I do see GTA leading to a mainstreaming of gang symbols and culture. IMHO, they are irresponsible. If any publisher wants to make a crime game that doesn't feed off of real life tragedy, then do something set in an earlier era, or a fantasy/SF setting. Real gangs aren't inspired by Gangs of New York, they're inspired by GTA and present day gang homage movies.

Who wants to play.....

As a small child we would run around arms linked shouting "Who wants to play ..WAR" trouble was we would do it for so long playtime would be over without a shot fired - Not yet joined the army.
I had a ZX Spectrum, played defender and shot those little spider things to oblivion - Not yet joined the Space Corps.
I went to Amsterdam and saw all the Hookers - Didn't shag one, too chicken.
Got a PC - Halo, Far Cry - Neither Zombie nor desert island slayer yet.
Got an Xbox, played BLACK - Not wandered into Europe with a machine gun yet.
GTA 4 - Not got it yet, too scared to play it what if I want to .......... It's a f**king game, it's entertainment! "How can you call that entertainment!!??!!" - Listen mate you like Classical music, it makes my ears bleed and is always in the Physco films as a soundtrack, I don't listen to that sh1te because I do not like it, don't play the bloody game if you don't like it, don't tell me it's gonna turn me into a killer, dont tell me I wont get a job I have one - a good one, I've got a G'f aswell and yeah I wanna kill her but thats cause she leaves her crap on the bathroom floor, so will I kill her NOPE, but listening to Mozart yep that would make me a killer - Horses for courses, you do your thing I will do mine. "Oh but in my day......" No in your day you used to go to the seaside and beat the living crap outta each other because the other guy was a MOD or a ROCKER or you would go to the football and kick the sh1t outta the oppositions fans! - Right, Chuck FU! Ban music, Ban football Ban gaming and watch as the streets fill with very bored very restless people looking for ............you get the idea.

[I remember linking arms with my fellow infants and wandering around the playground singing: "Who wants to play, kissing the girls." Wonder what the GTA-generation's updated version of that is... Ed.]
