AMD details a grim quarter
Gory details but nothing unexpected
AMD ANNOUNCED a pretty horrible quarter with a net loss of $358m, or $.59 a share at 42 per cent margins. The operating loss of $264m included $50m for the ATI acquisition.
Basically, all segments were down, and that is no shock, they simply didn't have product to sell. The official word is that the cause was 'softening demand for previous generations', something that is normally offset by new product. AMD's woes are based on the fact that the new product is a year late and 500MHz short.
This blew them out of the water on the server side, and that is where the margins are. That lack of new cores is starting to trickle down to desktops, making things worse and worse. On the up side, Barcelona cores are finally starting to ship in a form that OEMs will touch with a 10 foot pole, and triple core is making Intel very nervous.
The other bright spot is graphics, ATI has much higher margins and stayed level, at $-11m, despite the normal seasonal down turn. Given that they are going to gain huge market share in the lucrative notebook segment this year, things are looking up in a big way there.
The biggest theme of the day was cost reduction. Now they are at about a $2B break even point, and the goal is to get that down to $1.5B, quite a large goal. You know about the layoffs, that and dropping capex by basically mothballing Fab 30/38 for the short term.
In the end, things are grim, no question there. They are losing money, and are promising break even in Q3. The main way to get there is cutting costs, the other is to introduce 45nm products. Because of the recent track record, we will see if they can actually execute on that promise.
One last note, the whole asset lite/asset smart bit, they didn't comment on it in any way until Hector slipped up when he was asked about fabs and leadership. He replied by saying that ownership was not necessarily indicative of leadership. I wonder what that means? µ

wasnt ati bought 2 years ago?
all i ever hear in amd financial reports is ATI cost us money blah blah, its been 2 years LOL beating a dead horse much, every year, we are down because we had to buy ATI , yeah 2 years ago LOLIts' Overvalued Eurodollars Fault!!!
When software co with one product, physics, is worth more than 40 Fabs, somethings wrong. Fabs Cost too many Euros.Fab 38, Started in 2003 on line for several years took all its guts (equipment) & shipped them to Soviet union. why. They don't have Euros. Forget euros, they won't pay out. No Sale Market. In fact, Euros don't even watch TV, just big city Maps of meaningless proportion. As BIG as Any Euro. hahaha. Gottcha.

Mothballs
Mothballing a Fab ??why would you do that ??
Morons ...
P.S. wtf was Thomas talking about? Can someone translate this from Klingon ?
Triple core, mothball fabs?
It's not likely that Intel is worried about AMD's triple core chips. Everyone, including Intel, understands that this was done because of their higher than normal failure of their chip process to produce acceptable percentages of four core product. If anything, Intel is rejoicing over it!
As for mothballing the plant(s), Reynod, you mothball a plant because you don't have enough demand for your product , or you can't produce it properly. That means you have no need to expend the large sums to keep the plant active.

i think he said hes an idiot and he doesn't know what he talking about and he doesn't even understand what he said :SIts JUST LIKE I SAID.. Asset/Light is about getting rid of assets!!!!!
BRILLIANT !!
I've seen better analysis from children
What a joke. Dropping margins causing revenue loss, eh? Wow. Do. Your. FUCKING. RESEARCH!Clue 1: margin last quarter.
Re: Mothballs
Because the Old equipment is no longer cosst-effective and they do not have the money to buy a new one.So basically, they keeping the cleanroom clean, to be able to use it in the future (in 6months or so).
Remember, half the cost of the fab is the cleanroom thingie, and You usually do not need completely new cleaning equipment when You go to smaller process (this does not hold for the machinery, of course)
Just my 2 pints in to the fire.
3 core cheaper ?
One interesting aspect of AMD's "true quad core" design is that it's likely that Intel's 2x2 quad core architecture costs less to produce than even AMD's 3-core approach --- though 3-Core is something they had to do to be cost-effective.The "true quad" approach had a chance as long as it out-performed the 2x2 approach.
In the end, it appears that AMD's approach has lost on all 3 fronts: time-to-market, cost, and performance
Quality & Effiency Go So Far.
Rey of Nerd: Heres reason, in Klingon: Once Process gets so Effienct & quality so clean Price skyrockets with sales, Workers get Big Cut, yet process Machines can Move to Dumbieland & work for nuthing. This is Due to Limited Supply of Money fighting over Quality as fast as its made.So they get more with less is one fix Here, yet ruins local economy, as NO new input of Monies is forthcoming. Thats Key: More New Monies.
Well its Over Value thing, so Cut Euro BAck, Double Number of Euros on Paper, NOT Crimp Worker. That way production increases where production was developed in first place.
However, euro didn't do that, it took Short Sighted Way & left whole mess to Low Cost Forgieners, thinking had DEAL. When Actualaries Should have just PRINTED Twice as Many Euros to cover increased Value & been left in Peasce.Thats piece of eight.
