Indonesia blocks YouTube

It's getting crowded on the bandwagon

FLEXING ITS NEW INTERNET censorship muscles, the Indonesian government has blocked YouTube, apparently for making available the anti-Islamic film, Fitna, by right wing Dutch politician Geert Wilders.

As well as banning Wilders’ film, some hardcore Muslims, unaware of the irony of what they were doing, protested outside the Dutch embassy in Jakarta, calling for the filmaker’s death. The film, Fitna, the Arabic word for “religious discord”, accuses the Koran of inciting violence.

Indonesia has asked Internet providers to block access to the Video sharing Web site and according to Reuters, the government’s information minister, Muhammad Nuh, has written to the YouTube asking them to please remove the film.

But the Indonesian government don’t seem to have quite mastered the art of censorship just yet, as Indonesians subscribing to the country's largest telecom company ISP, PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia, told Reuters that they were still able to access YouTube.

Wilders’ film was launched on the Net last week, amid vocal global protest. The film starts and ends with a cartoon caricature of the prophet Muhammad, with a bomb under his turban, ticking away. The film then goes on to flash scenes from the September 11, attacks on the US, and several other Islamist bombings, accompanied by Koran verses. The 15 minute film goes on to describe Islam as “the enemy of freedom”.

This is not the first time that YouTube has found itself in trouble for religious incitement. Pakistan blocked the site in February, for material considered offensive to Islam, taking down much of the world’s access with it, when Hong Kong Internet Service provider PCCW distributed Pakistani Telecom Association's hijacked IP redirection by mistake. The offensive material included the controversial sketches of the Prophet Mohammad, published in the Danish press last year.

Indonesia, a former Dutch colony, has a population that is 85 per cent Muslim. It recently passed a controversial law limiting access to pornographic, violent or ethnically hostile sites. The Dutch government has distanced itself from the right-wing Geert Wilders’ views. µ

Danish Drawing

Just a point:

The danish drawre is actually thinking about suing the dutch film-maker for copyright-infringement, as he didn't give permission to use the drawing in the film. Also, that was in no way the purpose of the drawing in the first place.

Wow!

For a group thats super sure they're right about everything, they have a serious problem with any dissenting opinion.

"How dare you say Islam is violent! We'll kill you for that!"

Oh sweet irony indeed. Well, what do you expect, its always the groups that say they're right and know they're wrong that go apeshite when information is available to their sheep that could lead the herd astray.

Just look at China, it isn't just a religious thing only.

YouTube has blocked the film from their most viewed/etc pages

But if you search for Fitna you'll find it easily. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bCrCsTMokTU for the lazy. It's been viewed over 1 million times so far. Protest videos against the film show up on the most popular pages just fine though.

Dying breed

The issue at hand here is a celestial teapot. I feel very strongly about it. My teapot is special and I believe in it's eternal glory.
Pleaes respect my teapot & do not slander its worship.

I choose to live according to the teapot, you, in your country, can choose to live in any un-teapot way you wish.

Asking nicely I urge you to consider the feelings of those who believe in the celestial teapot. It is not nice to disrespect it. Our way is the way of peace and justice.

You specifically have passed our right of passage into teapot-hood. So I respect you, and I really like your internet, but if you slander my teapot I'll kill you, so says the ever peaceful teapot.

Wilders' is a racist

Wilders' is a Neo-nazi racist. Islam has nothing to do with violent acts committed by some people. Those violent acts are the sole responsibility of those who actually commit such crimes. It's like saying if I drive a car 100 km/h and run over some one it's not the car's fault but the idiot who was driving the car in the first place.

Hi

Hi i from Indonesia :)
starting at 6am today, the youtube was at last blocked here, tried sing a couple isp here.

a result ping to youtube.com was
Destination net unreachable

it still can be access though using a web proxy.

porn based sites are still not blocked.

anyway youtube already answer an email to our government that is say like this,
sorry the English are bad because is already translated to Indonesian from English and i dont have the original copy.so i translated it back :D

"internet gives to everyone to speak and listened. but make easy person expresses self at also show solicitude related to culture and policies at certain country.

that is why we make easy to user to report the content if they believe to the break rule and our rules. if this matter happens, we shall wipe off that content.

we also cooperate with law authority at country concerned with in handling the content that may be break applicable law at country.

we guess using this approach give balance between freedom and appreciate the law at a country "

but the government still block the access to youtube

many of us don't agree with this cos our nation was a democratic and this was not democratic at all :)

Fitna film was wrong because its misleading islam was a bad religion, and the quote from koran was wrong but it has a good point though like many of islam religion leader has an extreme point of view.and extreme action and this need to be fixed, but believe me islam was like all religion teach about peace.

so please don't generalize us with the extremist.
thx

Cencorship Suckz Big Time

It's not even a week, yet the new Internet Ban law is already being implemented. It takes forever for the goverment Faggots to deal with corruption, but it just takes couple of days before blocking web sites, porns.

Freedom of speech has no meaning here in Indonesia. Heck this may be my first and only post, if some idiot in the goverment get offended and decide to block the Inquirer.

The Indonesian government has added Rapidshare and Multiply to the ban list.

Internet freedom is dying here...fast.

Youtube

Hello its me again,
youtube was already blocked through IIX by APJII (Indonesia Internet Service Providers Association)
but cause all isp have another routing (redundant) so users are still can access youtube.
but the problem on 5 april was because an unknown ISP try to test to block youtube through Open IXP but this was create a problem to all isp so it cannot access youtube at all.

an ISP called XL already blocked youtube and other sites like
My Space, MetaCafe, Rapidshare

other ISP called Indosat still not yet blocked youtube due the not receive the letter from the government

many Indonesian board/forum users has already disappointed with this action and willing to make a demo

Fool

I am also from Indonesia.

I think if I were the porn webmaster I will change as many domain as posible. Event if I can't do that, I still able use blogger, friendster, and other good site. So what do the goverment do? Blocking all this good site? Fool. The control is from people themself.

Another mimic the uninportant thing. Why Indonesia don't try to shoot every corruptor head? That's important to make this country prosper. Why Indonesia also not try to learn why many small nations with no resource can be prosper nation? I think it is the first priority that Indonesia must learn not the fool think like blocking site.

power-abusers

Just because a single video isn't to this country's liking, does not mean it gives these power-abusers the right to block the entire access to the website. Youtube is the only honest website worth looking at these days. Maybe this country needs to pay less attention to the media and whatever is being posted in youtube, and pay more attention to those who needs food. Has it ever occur to them that this country is not occupied by Muslims only.

These people need a life.

Hi, from Indonesia! Okay, seriously, this country is a disgrace! These people need better things to do. Millions of people are living of the street and I think that's a way bigger issue to jump up about. What is wrong with you people! Blocking YouTube and MySpace? If you truly believe in your religion, you shouldn't let a few videos feeding blasphemy disturb you! And I'm guessing most of us won't even know such video exists if they didn't make such a big deal about it. It's times like these that makes me feel disgraced to be an Indonesian. I hope to be able to do something about it in the future. BTW, those other Indonesians who made comments should learn a bit of grammar. Show our country some class, will you people?

Why I Like Fitna

Because some Dutch people became Muslim after watching it. I'm Muslim and I'm against these stupid Muslims making it harder for people to learn more about Islam. They are NOT standing up for Islam, but feel like their own feelings are hurt.

Meanwhile, in Indonesia, they can block YouTube, which doesn't have porn but many useful videos, yet all the porn sites are still accessible.

I heard the Indonesian Minister of Communication and Technology speak to an international crowd on Monday, and he was speaking in his local language (Javanese). Damn incompetent politicians.

Don't Blame Islam

It isn't the fault of the religion, but the fault of the people who are taking it too far. The government shouldn't tear down the freedom to watch youtube just because of a film. We can't expect everyone to think positively of Islam. There are always going to be people out there that will have their own opinions and thoughts. Remember the Spanish Inquisition and the Holocaust? Those weren't because of the religion, but of the people who push too hard.
I think that it is also the fault of the filmaker because no religion should be discriminated in any way. Just because there are bad people, doesn't mean there are bad religions. I am Islam and I have always been taught to be tolerant of other people and their beliefs. I mean, is that seriously so hard?

Indonesian ISPs allow Yotube

FYI, as of today (April 9), most Indonesian ISPs have unblocked access to Youtube, Myspace, Rapidshare, etc. (thx God!)
they did it because they received many complaints from their customers.
