AMD waves Stars and Stripes

Forbes goes misty eyed, sings God Bless America

CHIMPZILLA may be suffering the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune on the stock market, but the plucky little outfit can still find time to support America's finest.

"Every branch of the military is using our stuff," George Warren, AMD's director of public sector sales, told Forbes. "That's a dramatic change from 18 months ago."

Apparently, over the past two years, the US Air Force has made 70 per cent of its 330,000 personal computers AMD-based.

The mag adds that the military market looks like a 'natural fit' for the combination of AMD and ATI, for applications such as flight simulation and advanced, three-dimensional mapping applications on the battlefield and elsewhere. Obviously, none of these things can be done using any other hardware.

Warren also added that AMD's market share in desktops and notebooks is stronger in the public sector than in commercial operations, due to government purchasing rules majoring on cost issues, meaning that purchasers can't be too picky on which brand of CPU they specify.

"That helps clear the way for AMD to make its pitch on delivering faster processing speeds at a lower price," gushes Forbes.

Now what was it astronaut John Glenn said went through his mind as he awaited lift-off? Oh yes: "You're thinking you're sitting on top of the most complex machine ever built by man, with a million separate components, all supplied by the lowest bidder." µ

Sounds great

Sounds great to me. The military gets a good product at a low price and AMD gets some money. What's the problem?

Rockhound not John Glenn

"Now what was it astronaut John Glenn said went through his mind as he awaited lift-off? Oh yes: "You're thinking you're sitting on top of the most complex machine ever built by man, with a million separate components, all supplied by the lowest bidder.""

It was Steve Buscemi's character "Rockhound" in the movie "Armageddon". John Glenn was a good guess though.

AT adds: Why not try Googling it?

Glenn

Yes, AT, you really should Google it:

John Glenn:
"I looked around me and suddenly realized that everything had been built by the lowest bidder."

Rockhound:
"You know we're sitting on four million pounds of fuel, one nuclear weapon and a thing that has 270,000 moving parts built by the lowest bidder. Makes you feel good, doesn't it?"

About Time

Why should the government care what CPU they are using as long as it meets their performance requirements? Last I heard, the most powerful super-computer is built using Opterons. And for office work, does it matter really matter? So I don't see why AMD was out of the running before.

Yeah, on consumer side (gaming and video transcoding etc really), AMD's current product line is kind of weak.

Well, systems aren't built by AMD directly so worst come worst, government can get support from whoever builds their systems?

Goggle

Googling the quote reveals that the "lowest bidder" comment is attributed to a number of astronauts-- Armstrong, Shepherd, Cooper, etc. etc. Almost every astronaut with name recognition is thought to have come up with this line (though always with slightly different wording). I would guess that it was more of a pervasive attitude than a line that some specific person coughed up one day. The world may never know.

Whose Side where We On?

Red,White &Blue is Diplomatic Rag, Starting with Oriental Bomb makers thousands of years ago.
However, INTEL is: US Library of Congress. When AMD Comes to Washington, it is OUTSIDE City or in Small Dump of Unknown Street, where Auditorium owner takes anything they can get, on Mt. Vernon NW. Its in Murder Central Zone.
While I don't doubt 100% of all processors started life in Milatary, AMD is little bit of Low Key Here. of Course, IBM is GOD in Georgetown. Right accross street from German Televison Station where keep all those lovely Nuns in Convent. So Whose GOD ,Anyway?
AMD is fine Company emerging from private sector thru AT&T & Now Public.Today, AMD has strong Price Attack & will be slipping above $6.00 at any moment. People So Misunderstand US.
PS Notice few more are using entire name in POSTED BY: thats good, becasue all those posts will be listed in your post name on search engines. I don't.
I blazingly use Monikur or Nome' D' Voy. However, of course that lists mi name too.
Silliness, yet mentioned yesterday about recorded numbers, thomasxstewart, that mysterious Pundits from Above has 3,100 posts. some complied by each server & indeed Hotbed of 100s' of Posts for Each listing there.
Tracking People is Very Milatary,Tracking Companies, too. Even Heeish & Sheish in Non Sexual Oldie stage get full ThomasStewart Credits. You Just have to Know Where to Look.

AMD@Convention.Center.

One Exception to Low Life places of engagements of AMD in Washington,Dc: is when Hector Reyes, Ruiz means King in Hispanic, Was Allowed, An Additional Honour, To Speak for AMD At Washingtons' Convention Center.

This is due to N.A.F.T.A. and Expanding North American Continent. However, Convention centers are Tainted area in itself, Home to Rastafarian Armed Rebellion in 1979 thru 1982, When Rasties Won Demands Thru local Vote , they then Lost All Intrest in New Laws Passed for them. So Go Figure.
Wshingtons' Convention Centers where initially built in case Congress was bombed, there would be back up buildings to continue Goverence From.
In Effect 9.1.1 dystroyed One of Backup convention Centers due to Public Neglect, As Hon. Mayor afears mandated yet unelected Hon Govenor taking DC Statehood to Task, already Passed by Voter initiative mentioned in 1982, afeared of Effective: ability of Higher Office to Marshall an Army.
Confused? Well, Locals don't even understand issues, let alone cause & effect linking of events that started way, Long, ago.
Yet point is, Hector Ruiz was Honored, even though AMD Big Wig, By having three day event at remaining Convention Center. Once in quite Long While for any AMD event for That specific location in Washington,Dc, Yet Hector will be back there alotta times befoe time is out.I Guess.
Speaking of Intel above, Remember, Intel would have carried on Till Microsoft went Kapout,.Ruining Good Code.
Until AMD invented Workable XP Processor, Intel design just sucked too long strings, way too many times & crashed often. It would have NEVER Worked Right with Pentagon Design.(Could their be Pentagon VI?,Ever?)
Also, I Meant Microsoft is US Library of Congress(NOT Intel-Puke Big Mistake by small midget),
I have NO Idea what Intel is. Some TV Remote Control Chip Maker, & they work kind of Crummy Too.
Intel is more like Control Data. It is IBM who are BIG Processor people & that means when Chartered Sends Stuff, IBM will sell it First.Americans are SO Mixed Up, Its Hard for small peoples to Remember Qwerty Details.SORRR EEEe.enough spoken.
For Certain Processor Origin is Domain of Thomas Stewart.
