JAPANESE COMPUTER COMPANY, Fujitsu, said on Monday that it would be releasing a new range of high-performance hard-disk drives for laptops, with significantly more storage space.

The "MHZ2 BJ" series of drives will apparently be able to hold up to 320GB, will support the SATA (Serial ATA ) 3.0 Gb/s interface, and will have discs that rotate at 7,200rpm (revolutions per minute). Fujitsu already sells a range of 2.5-inch drives at 7,200rpm but these models only have a 120GB capacity maximum.

Fujitsu reckons that the MHZ2 BJ is amongst the most power-efficient drives in its class, requiring only 2.3 W of power for read and write operations. It also claims that the drive is low on hazardous substances.

The MHZ2 BJ HDDs will be made available in various capacities, including 80GB, 120GB, 160GB, 250GB and 320GB. Fujitsu hopes to start shipping them by the end of June 2008 and to have sold two million of them by the end of March 2009. Pricing is as of yet still unknown. µ
